Community Episode Recap: "Cooperative Calligraphy" Season 2, Episode 8

In a fairly lackluster episode of Community, the group is secluded within the study room until Annie can find out who stole her purple pen (assuming she didn't have it herself). Now when I say "lackluster," please take that as a comparison to other Community episodes. I'm sure I'll still watch this episode a few more times before even tapping into any other Thursday night programming that I've DVR'd — that, my friends, is the power and greatness of Community.

When the group is getting ready to leave the study room and view the highly anticipated "Puppy Parade," Annie announces that someone has stolen her favorite purple pen. Apparently this is not the first time this has happened and this pen is the straw that broke the camel's back. She immediately demands a thorough search and investigation in to the whereabouts of her special writing utensil.

The doors are locked, the room barricaded and the hunt begins. Annie goes as far as demanding everyone empty their bags and purses and, eventually, pushes the envelope further with a strip search (boys on one side of the room and girls on the other, of course). The search gets out of hand as everyone soon finds out more about each other than they needed to know — for example, emptying Abed's contents reveals his perfectly constructed chart of each female group member's menstrual cycle. Don't worry; he has an excellent explanation for this.

The invasion of privacy and continuing curiosity of who the culprit brings everyone to a state of hysteria and madness — as the episode progresses, Annie ends up being the least concerned when she sees what this has done to everyone. It is Jeff, however, who truly realizes what everyone has become and provides the group with his "winners speech to take us home" (quoting Abed).

Jeff explains that the lengths they have gone (to the point where the cut Pierce's leg casts off) to find this pen is so insane that the thought of a ghost entering the room and taking it actually seems more likely. He settles everyone down, puts a smile on their faces and everyone accepts that they are decent people and wouldn't lie or steal from each other. Of course there was no ghost; the darn monkey had been stealing these pens all along! He has an entire heating vent full of miscellaneous, stolen goods!

Fortunately, the episode concludes with a peak in on the puppy parade with hilarious commentary from Dean Pelton. My favorite line from the episode came from Abed when the Dean entered the study room post-search:

The dean asks what the hell they did in there, to which Abed responds with "something you and your puppies could only dream of you non-miraculous son of a bitch."

Still my favorite show on television, even if I did see this as a weaker episode. What did you think?
