Community Episode Recap: "Basic Rocket Science" Season 2, Episode 4

Season 1 of Community provided us with some amazing spoofs. Mafia films, action/adventure movies, Good Will Hunting, Batman Begins, romantic comedies and more. This week, we are treated to an entire episode of sci-fi space films, specifically Apollo 13, Armageddon, The Right Stuff and others.

When the dean finds out that City College (and local rival) has a space simulator, he decides Greendale needs one of its own — and the study group has the duty of cleaning it (a punishment for creating a school flag with an inappropriate theme). The spoof begins right off the bat as the news of the rival simulator is told in a dark room with a projector, filled with men who look like they came from CIA headquarters. I love how the dean's computer background is clearly two men dressed in Dalmatians costumes, a creepy yet funny theme (Halloween's just around the corner, hint hint). In the parking lot where the "simulator is," the group immediately dismisses the dean's instructions and all go inside the "space station" which they are only supposed to clean. While they clean, they provide a hilarious view of Leonard practicing in the simulator, where he can't believe "he's not really in space" as he pilots a cardboard box.

Inside, the group suddenly gets locked in (but not before Abed runs to his dorm to change in to something that fits the occasion more, and makes the spoof more hilarious). We now have a case of Pierce falling in to a serious case of claustrophobia and panic while the rest of the group plans a way out. Getting out can only be done by completing a simulation instructed by a computer-animated Col. Sanders (who becomes Pierce's enemy). It appears from the inside that the simulation has begun, but they are actually being towed. In spoof fashion they begin lift-off! Abed runs out of the dorm in an Armageddon-style orange space suit only to find the space station missing. He looks left, right and, of course, up.

The group is in the midst of finding their way out, and we may as well be in outer space. Troy has taken the captain's seat and takes it upon himself to captain the vessel. Abed, back at Greendale and with the dean, has taken it upon him to communicate with the group in an effort to bring them home (hello, Gary Sinise?). He believes he can talk them through the simulation to open the window and get them home. As the entire space station is KFC-related, their gears are currently at "original recipe," "6 pieces" and "tasty" (they need to get to "delicious"). When Jeff can't break the window open, they decide to listen to Abed and complete the simulation through his instructions.

Pierce begins to go crazy and is locked up in a cage by the group. It is soon revealed that Annie set up the space station to be towed because she was going to transfer to City College and sabotage the launch. When Jeff defends the school that even he calls a toilet, Annie realizes that the group does care about the school and it's time to come together and "get to their stations." Working together to create the best "herbs and spices," they begin to make strides in getting home (with Abed's help at station command, of course). The window opens once the simulation ends, only to find out that they might as well be on the moon because they're so far away. "Sorry Jeff. I'm afraid...you're out of town," states Abed.

Never admitting defeat, the group finds their way into the driver's seat of the Winnebago (space station) as Pierce rips the Col. Sanders' monitor from the wall revealing access to the front. Annie gets behind the wheel and it's off to Greendale they go. Back at the school, City College's dean goes head-to-head with Dean Pelton (or terrible dean, as Jeff put it). At that moment, Jeff radios in that they are on their way back. It looks like they may win after all. They storm on to campus, where an absurd amount of press has shown up for the faux-launch. A fantastic slow motion shot of them exiting the space station could bring the viewer to tears. If that doesn't do the trick, Jeff calling Troy captain will.

Another great spoof episode from our favorite community college study group. Although there was room in this episode for some spare Chang, I would have loved to see him as some sort of space villain. So, aside from the obvious Apollo 13, Armageddon, and The Right Stuff references, what other movies did you notice being spoofed? What were your favorites?
