  • Jeers: A Starsky Isn't Reborn | Cheers & Jeers | 7/22/2008
Jeers to The Closer for wasting Paul Michael Glaser. I was psyched when I heard one of my childhood idols would make a rare TV appearance on another cop show, three decades after he policed the streets on Starsky & Hutch. Imagine my disappointment when Glaser was given only two brief scenes as a movie producer/murder suspect — and even those were dominated by Amy Aquino as his vengeful wife. They could've at least let him drive a Gran Torino or something.• Share your own raves and... read more
  • Episode Recap: "Speed Bump" | The Closer Show Blog | 7/22/2008
Well, that was kind of a waste of nifty guest stars! Of course when I reported on Paul Michael Glaser's Closer gig, I (and probably others) imagined he'd get some tasty scenes to chew on. Instead, he and the ER lady were just big red herrings. Bummer! (For more on Glaser's visit to The Closer, see Cheers & Jeers.)That was a cute cold open, with Brenda and Fritz enjoying at least one round of wake-up sex. Poor Fritzy wanted another romp, but his back had other ideas. And then Brenda's cell... read more
  • On the Fringe | The Closer Blog | 7/21/2008
First up this week, congratulations to our leading lady and my partner in crime, Kyra Sedgwick, for her third Emmy nomination. Everyone at The Closer is already so proud of Kyra that it’s hard to know how much higher she might climb in our esteem, but it’s good to know that other people share our admiration for her incredible work. This Monday’s episode, "Speed Bump," explores the justice system’s response to people with no power whatsoever. I refer to those poor parolees for... read more
  • Will There Be Wedding Bells on The Closer? | Today's News: Our Take | 7/15/2008
Do we hear wedding bells for The Closer's Brenda (Kyra Sedgwick)and Fritz (Jon Tenney) this season? Indeed we do, executive producer James Duff tells TV Guide exclusively. "I will tell you that the first episode of this winter begins with Brenda trying on several wedding dresses," says Duff. "A date is set, but will that date be met? That's the question that we're asking."Although no one knows for certain whether Brenda will make the trip down the aisle, I'd say it’s looking pretty good,... read more
  • Episode Recap: "Controlled Burn" | The Closer Show Blog | 7/15/2008
I've said it in seasons before, I will say it again: I love The Moment. The Moment, of course, is the seemingly innocuous happening — usually a comment, and I believe often from Fritz — which turns on a light bulb above Brenda's head and points her (and thus us) toward the resolution of the latest mystery. The Moment for this season's premiere came when Fritz spoke of "dropping the cat off, and then picking her up later." Ding! And like that, Brenda realizes that the killer/firestarter... read more
  • The Fire Next Time | The Closer Blog | 7/11/2008
Unbelievably, The Closer returns this Monday for its fourth season and I don’t know what’s been more amazing, the actual joy of working on something you love (with people you admire), or the challenge of creating, writing and performing fresh stories that entertain our audience. Personally speaking, these are the two things I consider most every day: gratefulness and responsibility. We believe our viewers depend on us for great performances in authentic crime stories with several... read more
  • The Closer's "Power"-ful New Season | TV Show Previews | 7/11/2008
I just have one question for you Closer fans out there: How is Brenda Leigh going to get through her job without sugar! I know she's handling it, sort of, by laying off the chocolate, but how strong is her will power? OK, if it were me, I would pick Fritz and the possibility of motherhood over HoHos and Ding Dongs, but that's me. Brenda — well — could sugar win out?Let's rewind for a second: Last season's theme was all about "family", and Brenda sure had a lot of family time last... read more
  • Summer’s Must-See Star: Kyra Sedgwick The Closer’s ace crime solver opens up about the s | TV Guide Magazine Cover Story | 6/4/2008
TNT?s hit procedural The Closer has a way of capturing viewers? attention, whether it?s with the badly decomposed body that kicked off the series back in 2005?or the reminder we get in this season?s premiere on July 14 that dowdy-dressing LAPD Deputy Police Chief Brenda Johnson has a scene-stealing body. On a recent Tuesday, Kyra Sedgwick, who stars as Brenda, and Jon Tenney, who plays her patient, FBI operative fiancé Fritz Howard, are shooting a morning scene in which they pace between the... read more

The Closer's Jon Tenney has joined the remake of 1987's The Stepfather. Tenney will play a dad trying to reconnect with his teen son (Gossip Girl's Penn Badgley) after a divorce. Oh, and Hidden Palms' dewy Amber Heard is now playing Badg's GF, a role previously eyed by FNL's Adrienne Palicki.... • Not Feeling Super? The Football Haters' Survival Guide! | TVGuide.com's Strike Recovery Guide | 2/1/2008
Let's face it, it's pretty hard to avoid the Super Bowl (Sunday on Fox at 6 pm/ET, by the way). But to some people the big game and its inescapable surrounding hoopla is anathema. With that in mind, we present this Football Haters' Survival Guide, a few decidedly non-sporty shows that should appeal to those who think a flea-flicker is a way to kill bugs. — Joseph Hudak• Fans call the plays in Discovery's 18-hour viewers'-choice marathon of Mythbusters, beginning Sunday at 9 am.•... read more
  • GH Exclusive! Sarah Brown Previews Her "Wild" Return | Soaps News | 1/18/2008
A funny thing happened in the six-plus years since Sarah Brown left General Hospital — the role of Carly, the hell-raising, rollerblading tomcat she created back in 1996, was recast. A lot. With Laura Wright now embedded in the role, when Brown resurfaces in Port Charles on Jan. 31, she will have a brand-new vixen to bring to life — Claudia Zacchara, the prodigal daughter of mob boss Anthony. Here in Part 1 of TVGuide.com's exclusive sit-down with Brown, the three-time Daytime Emmy... read more
  • Will the Strike Force The Closer to Close Up Shop? | WGA Post-Strike Watch: News About Returning Shows | 1/11/2008
The Closer herself may be used to ending negotiations to her satisfaction, but this time it seems like Brenda has met her match in the WGA strike. "We were due to go back into production in about a month and we can't, because the writers need a two-month head start before we can get to work," J.K. Simmons, who plays Chief Pope on the TNT hit, told TV Guide at this week's Critics Choice Awards. "I think that if we're not back at work by sometime in April, there is no way we can deliver episodes... read more

  • SAG Goes Mad for Men | Roush Dispatch | 12/20/2007
I suppose I could dwell on the fact that a major Hollywood guild has once again ignored the very existence of TV's finest acting ensemble, Friday Night Lights — in favor of the mugging and posturing on Boston Legal. As they'd say on another SAG favorite, Grey's Anatomy: Seriously? Is it wrong to want to form our own picket line? Also: What's up with snubbing Pushing Daisies and its fantastical cast? And yet the Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations, announced Thursday morning, did shower... read more

  • Episode Recap: "Next of Kin Part 1; Next of Kin Part 2" | The Closer Show Blog | 12/4/2007
For starters, this mid-hiatus special, I thought, surpassed last year's, which had all that CIA nonsense. No, this two-hour block had a great blend of heart and hardness, at times deftly weaving together Brenda's family and work. That scene in the church yard, when Willie Rae took Wesley's hand? Misty eyes over here. What else was great was how everyone got something to do, with Flynn and Provenza high-tailing it to Atlanta (though perhaps not quite as quickly as they could, free flight vouchers... read more

And guess who's dropping by Suresh's for an unexpected visit? That's right, Sylar's home! But don't worry, all he wants is some breakfast — and it looks like Maya is cookin' a feast. • Preview: A Very Closer Christmas | TV Guide Interviews & Features | 12/3/2007
It's late afternoon on the mazelike Hollywood set of TNT's The Closer (special two-hour episode airing tonight at 8 pm/ET on TNT), and Kyra Sedgwick is filming a scene that would feel familiar to any fan of the show. As LAPD Deputy Police Chief Brenda Johnson, she stands in the office of Assistant Police Chief Will Pope (J.K. Simmons), telling half-truths to her boss to help cover the trail of her unorthodox crime-solving methods. In a crisply enunciated Southern accent, Sedgwick says, "This... read more
  • Ask Matt | 10/8/2007
What kind of chance do you think the CW's Reaper has to survive? I really loved the pilot. It was clever and witty, and I found myself laughing out loud more than a few times. And I adore Ray Wise. Kudos to the casting director on that one. Last time I saw him, he was an expensive attorney helping Brenda out on The Closer. He was wickedly charming in that role, too. I'm just thinking about my beloved Veronica Mars, which was also clever and witty, with awesome casting, but sadly could not grab... read more
