As part of the divorce settlement, Sally has taken over the car wash. When Charles arrives, Sally tells him the business has not been doing well for about a year. She was about to pay her income tax and did not have enough for money for the lease payment, and she is afraid she will have to close up. But she is determined to show her ex-husband that she can make a profit from the business.

Charles is overwhelmed with his schoolwork, the Powell children and Lillian (Ellen Travolta), his mother, who is visiting. He confides in Buddy that he is tired of solving the children's problems and becomes irate when Lillian and the Powell children appear at Sid's Pizza parlor -- his 'sanctuary.' The next day Jamie decides to get a part-time job to pay off a pair of expensive boots she purchased. He is shocked when he finds her working at Sid's as a waitress wearing a sophisticated hairdo and makeup.

Weekend Weary

Charles has to forgo a weekend trip to the beach when the doctor in the college infirmary reports he is suffering from academic exhaustion and must have total relaxation. The Powells are planning a yard sale, and Ellen gives the family strict orders to let Charles rest. Charles has a hard time watching the family work and eventually carries a few boxes outside. When it begins to rain, Charles helps the family to carry everything back into the house. The yard sale is moved to the next day, and only James will be able to monitor the sale. Charles assures Ellen and Walter he will keep a watchful eye on the situation.

Getting In

Charles and Buddy are trying to get into the fraternity, Delta Alpha Nu, and withstand a myriad of humiliating tests. Buddy is convinced he will become a member due to the fact his father, grandfather and uncle were Delta Alphs. They manage to garner a large amount of articles and points necessary for the scavenger hunt and prepare to take the written exam. Meanwhile, Adam has dropped his friendship with Kevin as he has found an exciting new friend by the name of Larry. Larry, however, is troublesome and dishonest. Charles is told by Travis, head of the frat house, that he has been accepted, but Buddy is not Delta Alpha Nu material.

The next night, Lillian agrees to stay with Jamie, Sarah and Adam enabling Charles and Buddy to go to a party. Unbeknownst to Lillian, Jamie talks her into taking them to a horror movie their mother did not want them to see.

Charles is trying to get a job on the Brunswick Journal-American through Gayle Landis, the editor. She offers him a part-time job as "Dear Amy," writing advice to lovesick readers. He agrees to be near Gayle, yet she asks him to 'spice up' his writing. Then Charles and Buddy come across a letter they are convinced was written by Sarah about secretly meeting a boy. Charles becomes worried and writes her back as "Dear Amy" with the suggestion she should talk to her mother, and not sneak around. Unfortunately, the article printed was not written by Charles and instead suggests they go to a motel!

Unfortunately, the plans made by the Powell family are cancelled and Charles bribes Buddy to take them to a concert in the park. As the evening approaches, a thunderstorm begins, yet Anna arrives safely...with her mother, father, and brother.

As Charles explains the campus to Dorothy, she slowly takes off her coat, glasses and wig displaying the spectacular-looking actress -- Darby Peterson. She begs him to keep her secret and be her friend so that she can get a good education.

Sarah is teamed with Sean as a study partner for physics. And Jamie guesses that Charles really likes Carol, Buddy's girlfriend; and Carol, in turn likes Charles; and Sarah likes Sean. All the while, Sarah emphasizes that Sean is strictly a 'study-buddy.' Buddy asks Charles to pick up Carol and they will all meet at the Powell house to go to the basketball game. When Sarah learns that Sean is coming by the house that evening, she takes more effort to dress nicely -- then becomes furious to learn that Sean is also going to the game. Following the game, Carol kisses Charles, and they admit their attraction for each other. Then Buddy tells Charles he wants him to date Carol because he and Carol really have nothing in common.

When Charles takes leave of his duties as au pair to visit with his parents, Buddy offers to take his place to impress Debbie, a girl from school who loves children. Ellen and Charles reluctantly agree. Buddy handles each situation with common sense -- which frustrates the children. When Sarah is kept after school for missing class, Buddy asks Jamie to look after Adam. Meanwhile, Adam runs away from home. Charles drops by to see how things are going and Walter tells him that if Buddy makes one more mistake, he will replace Buddy and Charles permanently.

When Buddy receives a new stereo cassette player from his parents, he sells his old unit to Charles for $47.98. Walter warns Charles he is buying a set of problems. Then Walter tells Charles the cassette player destroyed his Glenn Miller tape. Charles asks Buddy for the money back so he can buy a new tape for Walter, but Buddy insist the tape machine was working fine before he sold it to Charles. The argument becomes heated, and it appears their friendship is over.

After forty years Walter is going out on a date and he makes Charles promise to keep it a secret form the family. Then Sarah asks Charles to convince her mother she can go to an afternoon movie with a boy, yet Ellen flatly refuses. Ellen's plans to go out to a Broadway play go sour and Charles agrees to attend. Immediately Sarah reiterates her mother's saying that boy plus girl equals date, yet Ellen emphasizes that Charles and her are friends. Charles keeps Walter's date secret which inconveniences his plans to attend the play with Ellen.

Trade Off

Buddy and Charles have agreed to take Lori and Annette to the Kenny Loggins concert which is sold out. While Buddy tries to find tickets, Charles decides to barter his way into freedom. In order to have Ellen home the night of the concert, which means she has to take Adam to the basketball game that evening -- Charles makes an agreement with Sarah to type Adam's paper, in agreement that Jamie will lend her the video camera, in agreement that Walter will lend Jamie his Navy jacket -- as long as Adam washes his car. With everything sorted out -- Charles has Buddy barter the tickets from Les Marlin in agreement he will babysit.

Pizza Parlor Protest

Sid from Sid's Pizza Parlor, Buddy and Charles' favorite meeting place, receives a letter from Harrison Bartlett, Chairman of the College Board of Trustees, that his property has been selected as one of two possible sites for the faculty parking lot. Buddy and Charles throw a party and invite Mr. Bartlett to prove Sid's popularity. Mr. Bartlett informs them that Sid's Pizza Parlor was chosen to be torn down by a vote taken in a special session. Charles is upset that his 'home away from home' is facing extinction.

Walter announces to Charles and Buddy that Matty Whitford, who went to the Naval Academy with his son, is coming to dinner and hands them a pot of Fiji stew. Lt. Whitford arrives to a warm welcome and immediately lusts for Ellen. He asks Charles if he is involved with Ellen, whom he assumes must be lonely with her husband abroad, and Charles flatly denies his accusations. Then Charles and Walter taste the stew and suffer from a case of food poisoning resulting from bad clams. Ellen rushes them to the hospital for observation. Charles is terribly nervous about leaving Ellen alone with Lt. Whitford, yet Walter and Ellen refuse to believe Charles.

Buddy Comes to Dinner

Charles understands but asks him to keep his relationship with Lauren on a professional level. He explains he has a date with her and intends to take her on a ski trip. Charles pats Buddy on the back, accidentally causing Buddy to fall and sprain his ankle. Buddy recuperates in Charles' room and enjoys the attention he is receiving; so much so that he refuses to get well.

When Jamie, who wants to become a model, cannot write the essay necessary, Sarah tape records a speech for Jamie. Then she confides that she feels being a teenager is seven years of insecurity, doubt, and embarrassment. When the new issue of the magazine comes out, Jamie shows the family that Sarah is one of the ten finalists. Sarah is angry and blames Charles for sending in her essay.

The Egg and Us

Sarah and Jamie are given a project in Health class to take an egg and pretend it is a baby. Jamie names her egg "Egg" and Sarah names hers "Amanda." From the start Sarah takes meticulous care keeping a journal and carrying "Amanda" in a snuggly, while Jamie leaves "Egg" lying around. Meanwhile, Walter confides in Charles and Buddy that he ran into an old girlfriend of his, Gloria, with whom he spent a passionate and unforgettable night forty years ago. When he introduces Gloria to the boys, Buddy is taken aback...it is his grandmother.

Then Charles talks with Kevin's older brother who also threatened Adam...yet he sends "Homicidal" Herman to deal with Charles!

He also plans to attend an art seminar with Buddy, yet is forced to take Adam when Ellen leaves with Jamie and Sarah. At the seminar, Professor Wycliff mistakes Adam as a famous young artistic genius and after introducing him to the audience, presents the object of their study -- the female nude. To Charles' surprise the nude is Rebecca.

After two weeks of hiking in the mountains, Charles and Buddy return to the city. Happy to be back home, Charles walks into the house and is surprised to find several people he does not know. First there is 13 year-old Sarah, who seems very much at home reading on the sofa. In his room, Charles finds 12 year-old Adam, who has also moved in. Charles is beginning to question his sanity when he runs into Jill Pembroke, who is finishing packing and is anxious to explain. Mr. Pembroke has been offered a job in Seattle, and after considering, the entire family has decided to move. They have sublet the house to the Powells, who need Charles' help with their children in the same way they did.
