Postmortem: Castle Boss Breaks Down That Not-So-Merry Christmas Cliff-Hanger

Castle's midseason finale may have been a Christmas episode, but there wasn't a lot of holiday cheer.

After an ER doctor is shot on the street by a man in a Santa suit, Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Beckett (Stana Katic) quickly realize the victim may have been a doctor for the mob. During the twisty tale, Castle (somewhat against his will) becomes a blood brother with mob boss Dino Scarpella (Paul Ben-Victor), who urges (threatens?) Castle to help prove the innocence of the key suspect, Christopher Carlucci (Vincent Spano).

Exclusive Castle Sneak Peek: Esposito's Been Taken Hostage!

Something tells us Castle's Esposito might be swearing off public transportation soon.

On Monday's episode (10/9c, ABC), Esposito (Jon Huertas) and a group of passengers on a subway train are taken hostage by a mysterious gunman. It'll be up to Beckett (Stana Katic) & Co. to figure out the gunman's motives and help Esposito bring the hostage standoff to a peaceful conclusion.

Have the Kleenex at the ready for the 100th episode! "It's going to be a particularly emotional episode... [that] deals with Zeek's health," executive producer Jason Katims says. "It's an unusual episode in that it's a more compressed time frame than most of our episodes. It probably happens over 24 hours. It really is the beginning of the final movement of the series. ...  It's hopefully what will be a juggernaut toward the ending of the show."
