Mum's the Word on Strike Talks; Plus: Late-night Host Returns to Work

Carson Daly by Michael Williams/NBC Photo

Although the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers returned to the bargaining table Monday, when they left it again eight hours later, they didn't say diddly about what transpired. Rather, the blabbermouths held to a strict media blackout. (Bastards!) In related news, NBC's Last Call with Carson Daly is back in production this week, making it the first late-night talk show to cross the picket lines. Maybe they figured, writers or no writers, it's beyond help? — Ben KatnerFor more strike coverage, updates and unique points of view, check TVGuide.com's Strike Watch blog. read more

Carson Daly by Mitchell Haaseth/NBC Photo

NBC has inked a new two-year deal that will keep Carson Daly hosting Last Call, which recently celebrated its five-year anniversary. It was also confirmed that Daly will continue on with his New Year's Eve special, which debuted in 2004. And yet still, I can't read the guy's name without thinking of the four-letter word Jimmy Fallon used to describe him during Saturday Night Live impressions. read more

Carson Daly Celebrates Five Years of Last Calls

Carson Daly

After achieving teen-idol status as the iconic VJ of MTV's Total Request Live, Carson Daly replaced afternoons with late nights in 2002 as host of Last Call with Carson Daly (1:35 am/ET, on NBC). We spoke with the 33-year-old Daly, whose show celebrates five years on the air this week. TV Guide: Very few talk shows last this long. What's your secret?Daly: It's amazing to look back. In the beginning, people [said], "You're buried in the middle of the night. No one's ever going to watch." And that ended up being the secret, I think. It was a place for me to learn this whole new craft. Conan [O'Brien] gave me great advice: "Have fun and screw up a lot. You might not always have this arena to find your voice." I've been really lucky the network has read more

Ringing in NBC's New Year Is a Daly Job

Carson Daly

While Dick Clark and Ryan Seacrest dissertate on the big ball drop for ABC, Carson Daly will oversee all things "Auld Lang Syne" on behalf of the Peacock Network on NBC's New Year's Eve with Carson Daly, a Chevrolet-sponsored special kicking off at 11:30 pm/ET and featuring appearances by funny lady Wanda Sykes, oh-so-straight man Brian Williams and the artist now known as Diddy, as well as a live performance by Mary J. Blige. Here's what the man TV Guide once called "the Pied Piper of Generation Y" had to tell us about his hot Dec. 31 date, the "new" Last Call, "My Humps," Br read more

Happy Ending for Tears for Fears?

Backstage at Last Call with Carson Daly, Tears for Fears duo Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal are waiting to go on. They've been doing a lot of that lately. That's what happens when you're one of the biggest bands of the '80s (with hits like "Shout" and "Sowing the Seeds of Love") and you're promoting your first joint album together, Everybody Loves a Happy Ending, in more than 15 years. You do a lot of TV appearances (including, so far, The Tonight Show, Conan, Today and The Late Late Show), which means a lot of rehearsals and then a lot of waiting. "This is our third TV show in as many days," says Orzabal. "Basically, we're taking over American TV for every week up until the election." It was back in 1990 when Orzabal and Smith elected to go their separate musical ways after 14 years together, a partnership that began when they were teenagers in Bath, England. After the split, Orzabal, who retained the band's read more
