Premise: A supernaturally slanted, superbly photographed good-versus-evil series set during the 1930s, focusing on a young man with mysterious talents who is picked up by a carnival crossing the Dust Bowl. At the same time, a California preacher predicts doom while battling his own demons. The pace is deliberate (often maddeningly so), but the drama presents an unusually evocative rendering of the hope and despair of the Great Depression.
