The return of Jericho brings ...

Question: The return of Jericho brings up the question of how many other series have been renewed after having been officially canceled. I know some have done reunion specials or made-for-TV movies down the road, but how many have been brought back for actual episodes (even if it's just seven or so)? Answer: Again, it's entirely possible I'll leave something out here, but the historical precedent that most immediately comes to mind is Cagney & Lacey, which was truly and most sincerely dead until a fan campaign helped revive it (which led to the formation of the sorely missed Viewers for Quality Television organization). The fact that Cagney ended up running for years and became something of an Emmy darling should give hope to those impassioned Jericho nuts. (Well, not so much the Emmy stuff in this case. ... read more

DVD Pick of the Week: May 8, 2007

Cagney & Lacey - Season 1 courtesy MGM (Video and DVD)

It's Wednesday, so you know what that means.... It's "Pick of the Week" time!May 8 brings us a couple of Season 1 sets, a couple of complete series sets, with the only volume release being Voltron.I'm drawn toward choosing from two releases this week — Cagney & Lacey Season 1 and The 4400 Season 3. I decided to go with Cagney because it's a long-awaited series, though The 4400 has more bonus material, a better transfer and better audio. But it's a newer show, so that's to be expected.I've been forever linked to Cagney & Lacey for obvious reasons (hint: it has something to do with my last name). Some people have a hard time spelling "Lacey" so I would just say, "Like Cagney & Lacey" and they would realize it's "Lacey" and not "Lacy." Cagney & Lacey, for those who aren't aware, started as a TV movie, then received a short first season before airing a complete second season. Sharon Gless joined the series in Season 2, so MGM decided it was best to release these epi... read more

"Arrested" Development: Cagney & Lacey Gets a Date

"Thanks to a great effort by MGM executives and some not-so-subtle nudging by [series] executive producer Barney Rosenzweig," the press release reads, Cagney & Lacey will, in fact, have its first season released on DVD May 8, in time for Mother's Day. "History has repeated itself," says Rosenzweig, alluding to the fan campaign that once rescued the series from the chopping block and the new flurry of e-mails that prompted MGM to cut through the latest red tape and get out a DVD. "In a time when I wondered if anyone even remembered who we were, it was clear that they did. I'm grateful that they remembered, and grateful to the folks at MGM who saw this, too." read more

Cop-out: Cagney & Lacey Arrested on the Way to DVD

A long-awaited and oft-postponed DVD release of the first season of Cagney & Lacey — hoped to fittingly hit stores in time for Mother's Day — has hit yet another roadblock. The problem: Music-rights clearance issues were overlooked by vid-distributor MGM, which, as executive producer Barney Rosenzweig chronicles in his blog, is in no hurry to set things right and stick to the schedule. "Much like in the past, this might be up to the fans," Rosenzweig says in a statement, alluding to the grassroots letter-writing campaign that saved the groundbreaking drama in 1983. "Last time, they brought the show back from cancellation. This time, we hope they can help us get the first season DVD released." read more

I don't have any wagers, ...

Sharon Gless and Tyne Daly, Cagney & Lacey

Question: I don't have any wagers, arguments or bets to settle. I just have a question, if that's OK. Was there another actress who played Cagney on Cagney & Lacey before Sharon Gless did, or is my memory failing already? Thank you for your time.

Answer: Actually, there were two, Ruth. Loretta Swit (M*A*S*H) first played Det. Chris Cagney in the CBS TV-movie that aired in 1981. However, after that movie proved successful enough for the network executives, who didn't initially believe the concept was strong enough for a show to order up a series, Swit was unavailable. In stepped actress Meg Foster, and the reason for her abrupt departure, together with the lack of network spin on it, provides an interesting lesson in how different today's political climate is from that of 20 years ago.

Veronica Mars "My boyfriend just...

Veronica Mars"My boyfriend just fled the country with his dead ex-girlfriend's baby. I need a project." Don't worry, Veronica — I'm sure there'll be no shortage in your caseload as long as your friends and frenemies continue to be even bigger trouble-magnets than you are. On the friend front, Wallace's culpability in that hobo hit-and-run gets taken care of in record time — one fake limo ride and a few switcheroos (of the ex-girlfriend and cell-phone variety) later and our ever-respectable Mr. Fennel seems to be completely off the hook. It's not really that easy, is it? Methinks we might run into browbeating Uncle Rucker and basketball phenom Rashard again before the season's over. As for the frenemies, Logan and Weevil's ongoing Cagney & Lacey act ends about a read more

Premise: Tough female cops fight crime on the streets of New York City while battling chauvinism in the workplace. When the going gets tough they seek refuge in the ladies' room, where only viewers can see them let down their guards and show their vulnerability. For the depth they brought to the roles of best friends and trusted partners, Sharon Gless (Cagney) and Tyne Daly (Lacey) collected seven Emmys between them, saw the show revived from cancellation twice and starred in four made-for-TV movies.
