Brothers & Sisters Episode Recap: "Everything Must Go" Season 3, Episode 4

This episode found many of the Walkers struggling to give up something of value in order to move forward with their lives, regardless of the emotional consequences. Nora found herself selling off William's old possessions to make way for a new office. Kitty had to give up being Robert's "stellar" communications director to publish her book. Kevin was tempted to replace Kitty on Robert's staff, but it would mean giving up all the work he had done toward becoming partner. Sadly, Rebecca doesn’t get a reward for what she gives up: Her seemingly good-intentioned attempt to move past her issues of distrust with Holly only brings Rebecca more reason to keep her distance.

Nora decides she needs more office space to launch her charity, but when her plan to move William's furniture to the garage reveals a lifetime's worth of memories, Nora plans a yard sale. (Hey she'll even get money to start her non-profit!) Justin seems a little weirded out by Nora's determination to ship off William' s things, but can't get any one else in the family to see it his way. He's even scolded by Sarah and Saul, who with Kevin, assist Nora in sorting through everything, despite having to take a break from their "sublime" weekday afternoon by the pool. When Tommy came over to claim his childhood memories before Nora sold them away, he cleared the room. Saul and Kevin headed out for pizza and Sarah did her best to look invisible, despite Tommy talking about the time capsule the two buried as kids. When Tommy couldn't be ignored, the two argued about Sarah's quitting some more, with Tommy accusing Sarah of not being able to stick around because she no longer was the boss. Sarah then takes a shot at Tommy, claiming he's just upset because their dad brought her in over Tommy, while Tommy maintains that he's now in charge because Sarah failed. Last word goes to Sarah: "You're just Holly's little b***h." Classy.

Holly, however, turned her sights on Rebecca, going out of her way to hire her from the temp agency to do some filing. Rebecca managed to hide behind her work for the day, and tells Holly she has no interest in seeing her. Holly replies, "I'm not giving up on us," perhaps softening Rebecca, who finds a painting Holly gave William at Nora's yard sale and gives it to Holly as a peace offering. (How telling is it that William hung it in his office all those years and no one knew Holly painted it?) Rebecca accepts a full-time clerical position with the condition that Holly stops lying to her, to which Holly agrees.

Kitty makes it known to the staff that she is stepping down, and the search for her replacement begins. Kitty brings in a number of solid candidates, but Robert tosses them off as a bunch of "Ivy League yes men" who don't have the "extra something," giving Kitty the impression that he is upset at her for quitting to publish the book. When Robert sees Kevin at the yard sale, the two have words, with Kevin defending Kitty and calling Robert out for his agreement to vote yes on an upcoming bill. Robert then heads back to Kitty, apologizing for the way he's been behaving, noting that he's afraid that without the two of them sharing the work that has defined their relationship, they might go on to lead separate lives (which happened in his first marriage.) He again reassures her that he wants her to publish the book, and even invites Kevin in to offer him Kitty's old job. Kevin resists because of the differences in their beliefs and politics, but that is what Robert wants from his communications director — someone who will fight with him and make him think like the voter. Finally, he tells him to either join his staff and fight with him or continue to snipe at him across the dinner table for the next 40 years without helping him change the world.

Nora, celebrating the success of the yard sale suddenly realizes that her memories of William and her kids are all gone, and she "comes completely undone." Though she was satisfied earlier in the episode that William's cheating was his problem, she admits that it still gets to her, even though she hates that it does. Justin, who tried to warn her, promises that it will get better, comparing her battle to his own struggle with drugs and alcohol. In a touching moment, Justin goes out and buys a monkey figurine back for Nora, so that she has something to hold onto, and it becomes the centerpiece of her new office.

And just as Nora comes to peace with herself, the other warring factions came to peace as well. Sarah, after talking to Tommy's wife, cuts him some slack and brings their time capsule back to be re-buried. First they discover the unaffected twinkie and a bag of soil from the Ojai orange grove, which reminds them of the summers they spent working for their dad. They both agree that "it never felt like work," even when Sarah made Tommy the soil inspector. The two end their reminiscing by putting the capsule back underground (this time with pictures of their children for the next generation) and Tommy tries to get Sarah to come back to work. Though he says Holly won't be around forever and it could be like they were kids again, Sarah is unsure and leaves the conversation hanging in the air.

Meanwhile, Holly, despite trying to make her relationship with Rebecca work, receives a file on Ryan Lafferty, courtesy of her hired detective. And now that you've hired your distrusting daughter to work for you, it's probably not the best idea to leave said file out on your desk. But of course, Holly does, and Rebecca finds it, again feeling lied to. While we're not sure what Rebecca will make of Holly's interest in the other Walker brother, I'm also curious to see what Rebecca does with the information. Could she share it with Sarah and Kevin, despite Nora's wishes or will she use it to deal a final blow to her relationship with Holly?

So many unanswered questions in this episode. Will Kevin join Robert's team and support the "men of his ilk that he cannot stand? Will Sarah come crawling back to Ojai after all? Will Nora be able to finally put William in the past and move forward? And has Holly finally gone too far? Share your thoughts and comments on the episode and check back next week for more!
