Brotherhood's Al Sapienza Is Having a Gay Ol' Time

Al Sapienza

Brotherhood may ultimately be Tommy and Michael Caffey's story, but someone else stole the show last Sunday on the Showtime mob drama: Mayor Frank Panzerelli, who came out as gay in the third season premiere.

"I was like, 'Really? That's gonna be challenging, but it's gonna be fun,' Al Sapienza, who plays Panzerelli, tells TVGuide.com.

See what else the actor, currently starring on a stage production of Dirty Dancing, has to say about the revelation, how it will factor into this season's storylines, and why Brotherhood is (gasp!) better than The Sopranos in some ways.

TVGuide.com: The premiere was last week — some big revelations. How did the gay storyline develop?
Al Sapienza:
The present mayor of Providence is David Cicilline. He's an Italian and you wouldn't know it by looking at him or hearing him speak, he's a very hetereosexual-looking guy, but he's gay. He's out about it. He doesn't care. So my character ...

Do you have any scoop on Without a Trace? Anything on the big "You don't have to [raise your baby] alone anymore" comment made by Jack to Sam on the season finale? Will we be getting more "Smack"? — ShannonMatt Mitovich: This does not bode well — there's not a lick of baby talk in any of the first three episodes being shot this summer.Could you please give the world some scoop on Kyle XY? I heard it is not returning until January 2009, and it's only 12 episodes! – KyleMitovich: The "January 2009" part is correct. Alas, only 10 episodes are on the books right now (though I am hearing that run could be extended). Renewed Brotherhood Owes Dexter Its Life

Jason Isaacs and Jason Clarke in Brotherhood by Jim Fiscus/Showtime

Buoyed by its new post-Dexter berth — on Nov. 18, it hit a series high of 651,000 viewers — Brotherhood has been renewed by Showtime for a third, eight-episode season. Maybe now the cast of The Sopranos will stop making fun of the show's stars for only having a Peabody Award. — Ben Katner read more

Cheers: Dexter's Killer Finale

Jaime Murray and Michael C. Hall by Randy Tepper/Showtime

Cheers to Dexter for finishing its second season with a flourish. Michael C. Hall's "Bay Harbor Butcher" lived to slay another day after his crazy ex-lover Lila murdered his pursuer Sgt. Doakes — making it morally justifiable for Dex to off her. (I love a happy ending.) The skillfully executed episode capped a stellar year for Showtime, which just saw the Golden Globes recognize several of its series (although, sadly, not its best, Brotherhood). Want proof Showtime is the new HBO? Dexter's finale was funnier and more entertaining than Ricky Gervais' bloated, dispiriting Extras swan song, which aired opposite it on HBO. In short: Dexter kills.Related:• Daisies and Dexter Get Their Due• Read and react to Bruce's opinions on 30 Rock, Project Runway and more!• Share your own raves and rants about other shows on the Reader Cheers & Jeers discussion board.• We may feature your Cheer or Jeer on TVGuide.com or in TV Guide magazine! read more

On a Busy Sunday, Praising Brotherhood

Jason Clarke and Jason Isaacs in Brotherhood by Jim Fiscus/Showtime

This Sunday, it sure didn't feel as if the sweeps month had already ended. Major pivotal episodes of ABC's hit series, a movie special on CBS (one of the better Hallmark Hall of Fames to air in a while) and, somewhat lost in the shuffle, a season finale of one of TV's more underappreciated dramas. That's a lot to digest.First off, the watercooler show of the night was unquestionably Desperate Housewives, capping an above-par season with the long-awaited arrival of a devastating twister. The circumstances were just about as far-fetched as most things that happen in this diverting comedic soap, but that final shot of a flattened Wisteria Lane was truly apocalyptic. Lynnette’s banshee screech would have been justified even if she hadn’t just realized the house where her family had hunkered down in the basement was buried in rubble. Outstanding.(For the record, I side with those who think that Ida, the owner of the wayward cat, is probably the “friend” referred to in... read more
