NBC gambled that audiences would ante up for the return of James Garner as the amiable antihero in the role that made him a star in the 1950s. The part was still a good fit for Garner (who has always had charm to burn), but viewers preferred the younger rogue over the reserved, more mature cowboy, and the series soon busted.
