"Second Chances"

Well, this episode wasn't as laugh-out-loud funny as the previous ones, but I enjoyed my weekly Chicago visit nevertheless. Especially when there are fun guest stars. Helloooo, Jeremy Sisto! Talk about jaws dropping to the floor....But for some reason, I just knew that when he sat P.J. down, he was going to reveal that he was either married or engaged. And what an awkward way to explain it: "Just testing the waters once more to make sure I'm in love with my fiancée and not you." Ew! My jaw quickly set itself back into place. Plus, I'm not a fan of P.J. giggling like a little girl when she's around a guy. That's so not her personality. Aside from that guest appearance, there wasn't much else going on this week. Brando's going through a disappointing phase of messing around, but I hope he comes out of it soon. Plus, I still hold onto a little bit of hope that he'll one day sweep P.J. off her feet — or ask her out on that Jumbotron screen at the ballpark. As for the rest of ... read more

Second Chances

Hello, and welcome to my first blog. I hope it isn’t too boring. First of all, thanks for watching and for all the great feedback you leave us at TBS.com. It means so much!Well, here we are, the episode named "Second Chances." We have yet another fun guest star this week: Jeremy Sisto. Jeremy is great guy! He and I have actually known each other for a while now from playing quite a bit of poker over the last few years. He joked a lot about how much fun he had shooting this episode but that he was sad he didn’t get to play poker with "the Boys." He views that as a coveted thing for a guest star to do. Maybe next time, buddy. Jeremy plays PJ’s ex-flame who brings back old memories. Then they... well, I can’t tell you everything.I had a ton of fun shooting this one. Brendan seems to be more of a jerk lately and continues as such in this episode. And we finally get to see where Kenny works! The store looked really good. Our design crew does a great job every week bui... read more

"Dirty Little Secrets"

What a night of baseball! I just got back from the Yankees-Orioles game here in New York, so I was ready to continue the night with some baseball metaphors (well, a couple at least). Wait, let me calm down from the ninth-inning excitement I just experienced (thank you, Jeter). OK, I'm collected and focused on our Chicago friends.P.J.'s right: "Every pitch, every outfielder's movement has meaning. That's why the game is so fun."How funny were Steph and P.J. reading the parking signs? I had heard about Steph's debt troubles that would arise this season, but what a hole she's dug for herself! "Could you lend me $5,000?" Oh boy. And that's just what she asked to borrow. Her ship is sinking and Andy's the life raft. Perfect. We all know Stephanie lives in a fantasy world with her love-life plan and designer-chocolate business in the two-bedroom apartment she can't afford. And I don't see a treasure chest filled with 22 grand, do you? She should just ask Bobby to lend her the cash. Talk a... read more

What's next for My Boys? Do ...

Question: What's next for My Boys? Do you have any tantalizing details to share?

Answer: I don't know if I'd call these details tantalizing, but Intern Dani just screened the next three episodes, and here are the spoilery bits she e-mailed to me: Andy adjusts to life in the 'burbs, PJ gets visitors from the past who shake up her world, and Brando gets a wake-up call after exhibiting some out-of-character behavior.

"Ethics"

Don't insert yourself in the story. As if this group of friends could avoid that. They weave in and out of each other's stories so awkwardly, it's hard to go five minutes without laughing. Right out of the gate, Brando's little magazine feature became a group event. Now, I can definitely see Brando on a Sexiest Bachelors list, but Trouty? Come on. Poor Bobby didn't make the list (which he was reminded of more than once) but ridiculous Sexiest Party Man-Boy Trouty makes it? Johnny Galecki has mastered this role — even if I don't understand what he's saying half the time and cringe in embarrassment when he ruins everyone's game.Meanwhile, P.J. was facing an ethical dilemma as her own Man-Boy (minus the Party) was one persistent Cub. But we all knew that would go nowhere, because how could she date a player? But she was too tempted not to go along for the brief ride, and stories only twisted further when everyone ended up at the private magazine party. Can we talk about Andy getti... read more

Ethics anyone? Anyone...?

Monday's episode was a fun one for Brando. It kind of marks a distinct shift in his personality, and let's just say it's not for the better. That's actually one of the best things about this season. The characters get real, faults and all. It's kind of a running theme for the season. We get to dig up a little dirt on everyone, expose some of the skeletons in their closets, and like all good friends... rip on each other for it.We also had two guest stars in this one. Travis Schuldt from Scrubs joined us, and Johnny Galecki came back as Trouty. They were both great. Cool thing about Travis is that he just instantly fit right in. Sometimes it can be tough for an actor to show up to the set as a guest star and try to pick up the cast's rhythm, their inside jokes, their particular sense of humor. But he got it right away — we were lucky to have him.And Johnny, what can I say? I f--king love that guy! Anyone who can pull off a character as weird as Trouty has some major talent... and... read more

It seems strange to be saying ...

Glenn Close, Damages

Question: It seems strange to be saying this, but I think I'm actually enjoying summer TV much more than I enjoyed regular-season TV this year. And it's all because of cable. I have a show to watch every night that is really good: Mondays have My Boys (and Greek isn't bad), Tuesdays have Damages, Wednesday has Rescue Me and Thursday has Mad Men. They are all really good, well-acted, well-written shows. During the season I was really having trouble finding shows I enjoyed (Heroes, The Office and Friday Night Lights were about all). I don't remember ever really watching any scripted TV during the summer in the past, besides maybe the occasional show (The O.C. comes to mind). I'd assume it has a lot to do with cable networks putting out really good original TV, since I'm not watching anything on network TV. So, is this really the best summer TV schedule ever? Answer: It's certainly the busiest TV summer ever. But yes, it's also shaping up to be among the very best. The fall season would be ... read more

My Boys' Michael Bunin Gets Back in the Game

Michael Bunin, My Boys

Last year when TBS premiered My Boys (Mondays, 10 pm/ET), many people quickly dubbed it the new Friends. While that's a huge compliment to series regular Michael Bunin and his cast mates, he's taking it all in stride and is just happy to be working on a show that people are relating to. TVGuide.com talked with Bunin to find out how he spent his hiatus, who might pop up in the new season and why playing Kenny is sometimes frustrating even off the set. TVGuide.com: What were you doing during the hiatus?Michael Bunin: I have a weekly improv show with a troupe [The Red Shirt Freshmen] that's been running for about seven years, performing on stage once a week. Then about a year and a half ago, I learned how to play the drums, so I have this Irish band a read more

Am I the only one wondering ...

Question: Am I the only one wondering how a good (perhaps "great" would be too strong a word) sitcom like My Boys is sitting on TBS? I missed it last season, but I watched the all-day marathon last weekend and I must say I'm impressed. I set my TiVo to catch Season 2. Meanwhile, I've only got three sitcoms on my list to watch so far this fall. With the networks obviously struggling to fill their schedules with good comedies, how do ones like My Boys or Psych fall to cable? Answer: Why ask why? TBS has rebranded itself as a comedy network (mostly on the back of syndicated sitcoms), and part of that strategy is to develop a few signature comedies of its own. For now, My Boys is the only one that's truly worth recommending (The Bill Engvall Show being mildly mediocre, and Tyler Perry's House of Payne verging on the excruciatingly unwatchable). The fact is that the qualitative lines between network and cable have been blurred for quite a while (Psych, and more recently the clever Burn read more
