William Shatner, Boston Legal
From Lou May...
Jeers to Boston Legal. The Nov. 17 episode was positively obnoxious. This did it for me. I have long objected to David E. Kelley inflicting his political views on his audience, but this was deplorable, belittling anyone who didn't vote for Obama. (Read discuss and vote on Lou May's complete Jeer after the jump.)

How I Met Your Mother

Yes, this sitcom is blessed with the scene-stealing Barney, but it's sometimes taken for granted that the show works so well because all of the actors are so effortlessly good together. Tonight's episode employs a device that has worked well in the past and gives all the cast members a chance to shine.

James Spader, Candice Bergen and Cheri Oteri, Boston Legal
File this one under "Things That Made Matt Curious, So He Asked Around."
As revealed in ABC's November sweeps overview, the Nov. 17 episode of Boston Legal will guest-star SNL alumna Cheri Oteri (which we knew, from this TVGuide.com exclusive) as a woman who claims she was fired from her job because, among other reasons, she voted for John McCain in the presidential election.
Prime-time dramas typically film at least a month ahead of their air date — look to the left, and ABC even has episodic photos from the episode at hand — so this "timely" storyline begged the question: Would Boston Legal attempt to tell an election-centric story without once mentioning who actually was voted President of the United States more than two weeks earlier?
Get the answer, after the jump.

Valerie Bertinelli by Jeffrey Mayer/ WireImage.com; Julie Bowen by Carin Baer/ABC
Boston Legal's grand flourish of guest-casting for its final season continues. In addition to the return of Julie Bowen as Denise, this season's 10th episode will also feature a guest-starring turn by Valerie Bertinelli. Details on Val's role have yet to be revealed, even though her episode films this week. A onetime Boston Legal series regular, Bowen last appeared as Denise in May 2007, at which time she embarked on an on-/off-screen maternity leave (as well as made the occasional Lost visit). Her upcoming encore was first reported by EW's Ausiello.Bertinelli recently was cast as the lead in a TNT sitcom pilot, enjoying a bit of a career rebirth following the release of her candid memoir Losing It: And Gaining My Life Back One Pound at a Time, in which she copped to (among other things) cheating on hubby Eddie Van Halen. Question: I just thought I'd let you know, in case you don't already, that of everybody they could have quoted, Fox has quoted your good self on the back of the Boston Legal Season 4 DVD set. The quote: "an emotional blockbuster." It's perhaps a bit disingenuous, considering that quote was aimed at one specific episode. Then again, when have marketing departments ever let a little thing like context get in the way of sales?
Answer: Believe me, the irony is not lost on me, but the way I tend to look at these things is: If I wrote it (which in this case, I guess I did), it's fair game. And while it does seem a bit iffy to use a rave over a scene in a single above-par episode to characterize an entire season, which it's pretty obvious to most regular readers I was not a champion of, it's probably best not to take it very seriously, because I certainly don't take Boston Legal seriously. Except during those moments when it's an "emotional blockbuster," I suppose ...

Kimberly Williams-Paisley by Tony Barson/ WireImage.com, Betty White by Rebecca Sapp/ WireImage.com
Two pieces of Boston Legal casting news hit my Blackberry as I took a break from hanging with the Tree Hillers down here in North Carolina. (Check my Facebook page for updates on and photos from that!)For starters, Catherine Piper is returning to Boston this season, again played by guest-star Betty White. Catherine is one of the legal dramedy's most colorful visitors, having partaken in a murderous arc a few seasons back, and served a stint as the law firm's sandwich lady. Also on board for a guest gig is Kimberly Williams-Paisley, best known as Father of the Bride's bride and from her According to Jim run as Cheryl's sis. Thus far, no deets on KW-P's role or story. Matt Mitovich
