Every soldier has a story; even the ones who come back physically unharmed have scars. Every family has a story. Through the eyes of his mother, this is one family's story of a son going to war. Born Lucky... tells the story of Neil, the filmmaker's son and a firefighter in the British Royal Air Force, who finds himself caught up in a different kind of fire when he is suddenly sent to Iraq. Born Lucky is an intimate and sensitive look at Neil and his Middle Eastern/ British family as they come to terms with his deployment to Iraq. Viewers get to know Neil through the unavoidable revelation of his troubled emotions as the reality of his situation sinks in. Neil enlisted because he passionately wanted to be a fireman and was unable to get a job in the civilian fire brigade. Like so many young people in the Armed Forces, he is there by default, by virtue of the fact that he has no viable career alternative. The story begins at his Iranian Grandfather's house in London with Neil's farewell
