Question: I'm shocked and delighted by Fox's announcement about bringing back 24, but honestly, I think this points to the future of television. It's the same thing with The Following: Give us shorter seasons, TV Gods! Seriously, 22-episode seasons just don't work for so many shows, especially the serialized ones. How much filler was there in any given 24-episode season of real-time 24? A ton, inevitably. And every other heavily serialized show you can point to is eventually going to fall back on filler episodes, or extended (and frustrating) wheel-spinning, etc. It's just inevitable, and the best serialized shows are the ones that best manage this reality: for instance, The Vampire Diaries splits its season into three or four tightly focused mini-arcs that pack as much into each mini-arc as most shows cover in a whole season.  read full article

Do you have any intel on Homeland's next season? — Paul, Burlington, Vt.
The Season 3 premiere of Showtime's Emmy-winning hit will begin shooting in North Carolina at the end of May. Besides the expected new roles of a senator and National Security Advisor, the series is also casting actors to play psychiatrist Dr. Troy Richardson (for Carrie, we presume); a grandmother named Lois (perhaps Brody's or Jessica's mom will help with the kids?); a couple of girls in therapy plus a handsome young man named Leo (Dana's new pals?); and a fortysomething guy who ends up being someone's one-night stand. Oh, Carrie...

Premise: A scientist with an 'uncanny ability to read clues left behind in a victim's bones' solves murders in a procedural series inspired by real-life forensic anthropologist and novelist Kathy Reichs. Scientist Brennan is often teamed with FBI Special Agent Booth, who mistrusts science and believes evidence should come from the living. The Brennan-Booth pair have drawn favorable comparisons to Scully and Mulder of 'The X-Files.'
