So you're cruising down the highway one night with your pals. You're having a good time, and even though you haven't been drinking, your eyes tell you a human skull just bounced off the truck in front of you and is hurling at your car, ready to make sloppy seconds of your windshield. Greeeeat.
Hooray for Season 3 of
Bones! When your plots start out with skulls on highways and end up with cannibals and secret societies, what's not to love? But we'll get there. To start with:
Some Useful Vocabulary We Learned from This Episode
"
ungual - of, pertaining to, bearing, or shaped like a nail, claw, or hoof
"
osteoma - a benign tumor composed of bony tissue, often developing on the skull
"
squeeze 'n squish - Angela's euphemism for heavy petting
Let me key you up to where we left off in May. Angela and Hodgins skipped their nuptials and went right for the honeymoon after discovering Angela was still married to a guy she met on a trip to Fiji. By request of the U.S. president, Zack left indefinitely for Iraq to help identify bodies. Booth finally arrested Bones' outlaw dad, and B&B were left standing at the altar in an all-too-assuming matrimonial pose. Right. Because we need
more innuendo when it comes to those two possibly hooking up. Not that I really mind.
An osteoma in the careening skull from the highway led the team to ID the body as Gavin Nichols, violin virtuoso and swinger. His girlfriend's interrogation led Booth to Nichols' other bedfellow, Rhona Sumner, wife of the deputy director of the Secret Service. But the Sumners were cleared when their motive was stripped (literally - Mr. Sumner made a hobby of videotaping his wife and Nichols squeeze-'n-squishing, which proved he wasn't the Mr. Vendetta we thought he might be). The second suspect, the über-creepy Jason, a custodian, went on a rant about the yumminess of human flesh during his interrogation. ("It's not like chicken or pork, you know. People always say that. It's more like beef.") The team knew then that they had their man right there. Too bad he was later found dead in jail, left in a most sacrificial-looking pose.
Hodgins and Angela hired an investigator to find Angela's pseudo-hubby so she could get divorced and marry Hodgins, a needle-in-the-haystack undertaking that's carrying us into future episodes. Bones refused to go out into the field with Booth, claiming she couldn't until she found a replacement for Zack - yet she already turned away 17 applicants while stringing along an 18th. I wasn't buying her obtuse reasons, and neither was Booth, who brought it up with the doc a whopping seven times. Among his theories? A) She wasn't actually OK with Booth throwing her dad in the pokey, and B) she has mental problems (my fave).
Shows what I know, because the minute Zackaroonie showed up, Bones was right back in partner mode. Yes, the Zack Attack came back, Army-issue haircut and all, jumping right into the case. Earlier, B&B found more bones in an abandoned bank vault, along with ancient artifacts, a silver skeleton sculpture with a few real bones switched in, and an inscription on the door in ancient Greek reading, "Will no one help the widow's son?" Très mysterious. Hodgins' conspiracy theories had the team believing they might be dealing with a secret cannibalistic society, and Booth proclaimed they had a serial killer on their hands, the inscription being a possible link to future victims.
I promise to talk more about my favorite aspect - the science of
Bones - next time around. I just wanted to make we were all on the same page first. What were your favorite parts? Were you happy with this as a season-opener?
