Soon after news broke of the horrific December 14 elementary-school shootings in Newtown, Conn., the broadcast and cable networks scoured their schedules for anything that might be deemed offensive or inappropriate in light of the massacre.

Services featured include a Christmas-inspired affair with reindeer, elves and snow; a state-fair-theme send-off for a man whose disability prevented him from riding a roller coaster; and a tribute to a former doo-wop singer who was known for a barbecue-sauce jingle.
