Band of Brothers Blu-ray — Review

Simply put, one of the finest television events ever to be broadcast is now even finer in this stunningly wonderful Blu-ray version of HBO's gripping Emmy- and Golden Globe- winning World War II miniseries. And while HBO touts the original DVD release as the best-selling TV-on-DVD release of all time, every one of those original buyers should consider the upgrade. Never before has the Tom Hanks- and Steven Spielberg-produced look at the men of Easy Company looked or sounded so amazing (and that's a feat considering the audio on the standard DVD was heads and shoulders above its competitors.) Seriously, if you want to experience this masterpiece in its finest form, look no further.

Which mini-series do you ...

Question: Which mini-series do you prefer, Band of Brothers or Generation Kill? There are a lot of similarities between the two shows. For example, "Iceman" from Generation Kill is very similar to Captain Winters in Band of Brothers. (Their names are even similar.) There are dozens of comparisons one can make regarding these two great series, but overall, I prefer the scope of Band of Brothers. It really changed television. Yet Generation Kill is better then any film made about the Iraq War. Answer: It's not an either-or with me. Both are remarkable achievements in war docudrama. Band of Brothers had the advantage of nostalgia for a "great" war and an end to the story, while by necessity Generation Kill is a much messier, more cynical and less conventionally "satisfying" narrative. Brothers feels like history writ large, and Generation much more like journalism of the moment. HBO's scheduling of Generation Kill while the war continues is a much riskier proposition than putting Band of read more

So, if you have a dad like mine, this weekend is a cause for alarm. The New Season: Wednesday Heats Up

First, an important public-service announcement: Tonight on The War, we relive D-Day, a momentous turning point in military history brought to vivid life by those who lived through it, courtesy of Ken Burns' masterful way with documentary narrative. I know this is premiere week, and Wednesday is the most competitive night for new shows this season, but I wouldn't be doing my duty if I didn't remind everyone that this is TV you not only shouldn't miss, but it's an experience you'll never forget. (The reality, though, is that PBS is giving viewers multiple opportunities to see these episodes, and I can't think of a better gift DVD for holiday season.) Back to the network game, where only one of the nine new series being launched on Wednesdays is MIA: ABC’s marvelous Pushing Daisies, its premiere pushed back a week by the tsunami-like launch of Dancing with the Stars, which once again is turning out to be the ratings monster everyone expected. (And the men, by and large, had a bla... read more
