When Daytime Emmy nominations were announced Wednesday on The View, the CBS sudsers led the pack with 29 nominations to ABC's 12 in the major soap-opera categories. After an annus horribilis of budget slashing and cast cuts, there was finally good news for Guiding Light: TV's longest-running serial — which just turned 69 — will vie for best soap honors with As the World Turns, General Hospital and Young and the Restless. GL also scored the most acting nods, with a total of nine!
Speaking of suds thesps, many of the usual suspects were nominated, including Bold and Beautiful matriarch Susan Flannery, GH tough guys Maurice Benard and Anthony Geary, and GL diva Kim Zimmer. But Emmy also honored some newbies, such as One Life to Live's Renee Goldsberry, whose recognition was long overdue.

She returns as an FBI agent who is oblivious to the crush another fed (Less Than Perfect's Zachary Levi) has on her. "I’m not really even oblivious to the crush that he has, it’s more that he just annoys me to death," Brown told TVGuide.com's own Matt Webb Mitovich. "Zach Levi is going to be the biggest thing since sliced bread. You have got to put that in there." Consider it done, Sarah.

Italian stallion Paolo Seganti hopes to return to As the World Turns as Lily
With Luke heading into the story-line spotlight on As the World Turns, wouldn't it be great to see his biological father, Damian Grimaldi, back on the CBS serial? Viewers miss Italian stallion Paolo Seganti, who left ATWT in the '90s to do films like L.A. Confidential and Tea with Mussolini. More recent TV gigs include ER and Freddie. He's also married and has two kids with Carlotta Chang, who played daytime's first transgender character on The City.
Soaps in Depth — the mag where I started my sudsy career — recently interviewed Seganti, who's still gorgeous and quite open to a third return stint as Damian. "I was just talking to Martha [Byrne, Lily] and she wants me to go back on the show," he said. "I miss New York, and I'd love to go back, but we're just talking. It's not my decision. It depe
Van Hansis, As the World Turns
As you first read here in October, Guiding Light star Kim Zimmer (Reva) has pulled her talented 15-year-old son, Jake Weary, off As the World Turns, where he played Luke, the sensitive son of supercouple Lily and Holden. At the time, TVGuide.com explained that Weary ceded his role to recast Van Hansis so he'd have more time to do normal high-school kid stuff. Meanwhile, rumors published elsewhere suggested that Zimmer nixed her son's soapy acting gig because ATWT plans to make Luke gay. This chatter has worried Zimmer, who set the record straight last week on SoapNet's Soap Talk.
"[Jake's] a sophomore in high school and [ATWT] was taking up too much of his real-life time," Zimmer told Ty and Lisa. "He wants to play hockey and do school plays.... Our decision had nothing to do with the character being gay. I just want e
One Life to Live has recast Dr. Paige Miller yet again. Cady Huffman, who played the part on a recurring basis, last airs on Jan. 23. Soap veteran Alexandra Neil steps in as NuPaige on Jan. 27. Unlike her predecessor, Neil joins the ABC sudser as a contract player. "They wanted to take the character in a different direction," an OLTL rep tells TVGuide.com.
Let's just hope this
actress takes! Huffman didn't last long after replacing Paige No. 1, Kimberlin Brown
, who was wooed away by The Young and the Restless
. Before Brown, Mary Beth Evans
(Sierra, As the World Turns
) agreed to play Paige, only to back out. We know soap characters are blind to recasts, but eventually Bo Buchanan is gonna wonder why his girlfriend keeps changing faces.
Set your TiVo 'cause Dec. 27 will be a can't-miss day for As the World Turns fans. That's Brian Gaskill's final airdate as Katie's rich, geeky stalker, B.J. Greene. Oakdale's fictional TV station, WOAK, will also throw a telethon featuring musical numbers by ATWT stars Eileen Fulton (Lisa), Scott Holmes (Tom), Michael Park (Jack) and Colleen Zenk-Pinter (Barbara).

Question: Hope you had a great vacation! Where did you go?
Answer: If it's alright by you, I'd rather not say. I'm trying to retain some semblance of a private life before word of my exclusive TV Guide T-shirt line gets out and Ask Ausiello mania sweeps the nation.
As the World Turns alum Scott Bryce — who romanced Meg Ryan's Betsy back in the '80s as the original Craig Montgomery — is coming back to daytime. But instead of returning to Oakdale, he's headed for One Life to Live's Llanview as police psychiatrist Ed Crosby. He'll begin counseling broody cop John McBain (Michael Easton) on Jan. 4.
