Got Questions for Joss Whedon?

Joss Whedon with Dollhouse star Eliza Dushku

Joss Whedon, the singular mind who in the past has given us Buffy, Angel, "Captain Tightpants" and Dr. Horrible soon will introduce television viewers to another memorable (if "forgetful" character) — Dollhouse's Echo, played by Eliza Dushku. Echo is an "active," a kind of a robot-hooker hybrid whose native personality and memories have been erased, allowing her to be programmed with the specific skills or characteristics that any "engagement" — or client with a robust checkbook — requires.

As the Feb. 13 series premiere of Fox's Dollhouse nears, Whedon will be dropping by TVGuide.com HQ to answer not just our questions but many of yours. So take a moment, give it some thought and offer up the one thing you would ask Joss — on any topic — after the jump. read more

The WB Is Back, with Gilmore Girls and More!

Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel courtesy The CW

Two years after signing off the airwaves, the WB is returning with new programming — as well as some of its most memorable series — but not on TV. According to an article in the Hollywood Reporter, the Warner Bros. Television Group is reviving the network as a website, where viewers will be able to watch free streaming episodes of Gilmore Girls, What I Like About You and Everwood, as well as all other WB-produced shows. (The site's "working title," wb.com, currently jumps to a general Warner Bros. Studios roundup of movies, TV, DVDs, etc.)The WB, which merged with UPN in 2006 to become the bastion of twentysomething programming that is the CW, aired a string of fan-favorite shows in its 10-year existence, including Dawson's Creek, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. It's not clear yet whether non-Warner Bros. shows will be available on the site, but new Web-minisodes are reportedly in the works, with series aimed at the WB's core audience.Warner Bros. hasn't confirmed the ... read more

New Angel Comic Goes to Hell

Angel comic courtesy IDW Publishing

There's life after the apocalypse. Angel fans will finally find out what transpired after the cult show's 2004 finale, as the sexy vampire (played on TV by David Boreanaz) and his team faced down the armies of Hell. Buffyverse creator Joss Whedon has approved a monthly comic-book series that's basically Angel: Season 6, says Chris Ryall, publisher and editor in chief of IDW Publishing, which launches the first issue Wednesday. "We published a miniseries, Spike Asylum, written by Brian Lynch," Ryall says. "Joss loved it and said he finally saw a writer he thought could do this."Angel: After the Fall, which Whedon will oversee, picks up a few months after the TV finale in a Los Angeles that is literally in hell and ruled over by demon lords. "We'll catch up on which characters survived, how they survived, and the considerable changes Angel and others have gone through," Ryall reveals. Look for such familiar faces as (Spoiler alert) Spike (who's taken over the Playboy mansion), Gunn, I... read more

I am going to preface my ...

Question: I am going to preface my question by trying to establish a little street cred. My favorite shows include Veronica Mars, Friday Night Lights, Battlestar Galactica, The Sopranos and The Wire. While I have enjoyed new shows like Dirty Sexy Money and Chuck, there has been one show, to my big surprise, that has become my favorite: Moonlight. I know, the pilot was horrible. I originally checked it out to see alums from Veronica Mars and Alias, but I have stayed because of Alex O'Loughlin. I think he has created a really interesting, layered character, and the show's mythology and character development are really starting to take off. It's a fun guilty pleasure. It's not award-winning TV, but it's a lot of fun with a very charismatic lead. I think critics should give it a second chance. It's the first time I have watched anything on CBS in, like, 10 years. Any news on the prospects of this show given the strike? Answer: First off, you don't have to justify your enjoyment of any TV show ... read more

Eliza Dushku Lures Joss Whedon Back to TV!

Eliza Dushku courtesy Fox, Joss Whedon courtesy Fox

Short of a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reunion movie, this is just about the best news you could ask for: Eliza Dushku and Joss Whedon are reteaming for a new series! (Told ya it would be worth tearing yourself away from the candy corn to drop by The Ausiello Report.) Here are the five things you have to know about the show, and I mean now:1. It's a one-hour drama produced by Twentieth Century Fox to air on Fox. The first of the seven episodes to which the network has committed could premiere as early as spring. 2. It's called Dollhouse because that's the nickname of the high-tech lab where a group of human chalkboards are kept between assignments.3. Human chalkboards?! Yes! What else would you call characters like Dushku's Echo who can be given new memories, skills and even personalities, then stripped of them just as quickly, leaving them virtual children?4. Whedon is the creator, head writer and executive producer, and perhaps in part because Dushku convinced him to do the show, she... read more

Must Be Talking to an Angel? Even Better, It's Joss Whedon!

David Boreanaz in Angel courtesy 20th Century Fox

Awww, yeah. It’s finally here! Right in time for Halloween, one of TV’s best vampire series ever is sinking its fangs into the shelves with Angel: The Complete Collector’s Set. It’s like a David Boreanaz bender! And just like I promised, here’s some supernifty insight from series creator, executive producer and master of the Whedonverse, Joss Whedon, about our favorite soulful bloodsucker. (Yeah, I have the coolest job in the world. I know.)Thanks so much for taking the time to talk. I know you have a lot going on.Hey, it’s my pleasure. So Angel the Complete Series…this is a big deal!It is for me, just because I actually use my complete Buffy series all the time. [Laughs]Yeah, right? I think a lot of people do! Is there anything new included with this collection that’s not in the individual-season sets?Um, well there isn’t anything that I got to do with this set that I didn’t get to do with the series itself, because this is the serie... read more

I had a chance to watch the ...

Question: I had a chance to watch the pilots for both Moonlight and Reaper. I'm a big Supernatural fan, and these ghost/vampire genre shows, when done well, are a lot of fun. To me, one of these shows demonstrates how you do it well, and one demonstrates how you do it badly. Let's start with the good: I really enjoy Reaper. The stars are likable, the writing is fun, and it genuinely made me laugh. It obviously isn't taking itself too seriously, but the effects are still nice and flashy, and let's face it: You couldn't ask for a more charming Satan than Ray Wise. I hope he gets more screen time. The creators obviously have a clear vision that the look, the music and the story all contribute to. I'll definitely keep tuning in. Now on to Moonlight — yikes! First of all, that voice-over. We get it, you're an angsty vampire. Shut up, already! I think the excessive VO makes the bad writing even worse. Because the writing is bad. So full of clichés! I wanted to laugh at the overly serious ... read more

Premise: The enlightened vampire risks his soul to battle dark forces in the City of Angels in this noirish 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' spin-off. Formerly the Slayer's lover and ally, Angel relocated to L.A. seeking redemption for years of preying on innocents by combating demonic predators. It was a stylish addition to series creator Joss Whedon's 'Buffy' saga, anchored by David Boreanaz's tender-tough title hero.
