March 14, 2007: Candy-coated Pain Season 8, Episode 3

Should I be counting the number of times someone cries or screams on this show? Jeez, things have only just begun. Save the tears for something drastic. Jael is a good example. Valid reasons to cry: first, sitting eight hours for a complicated, painful weave, only to have it undone and replaced with Mia Farrow's Rosemary's Baby miniscule 'do. Second, a good friend dies of an overdose. Invalid reasons to cry (and cry and cry and cry, Brittany): your weave itches, the ice cream is cold, your head hurts. Your head is not the only one pounding - from all the screaming and temper tantrums, that is. And Miss J. and Tyra don't help the situation, staging their own mock makeovers and fake freak-outs. Such poor acting belonged back in last week's high-school gymnasium. Well, at least tonight brought us the ladies' much-needed makeovers and shed some light on more of the contestants. (Sarah seems to have curbed her ego, and Jaslene was pretty quiet.) We saw that Whitney and Cassandra are the encouraging peacemakers, and Brittany's a big whiner. Meanwhile, Renee has seemingly dropped all mention and thought of her son and turned her attention to stirring up as much dissension in the house as possible, unleashing her catty criticism on those who, ironically, are a lot like her: self-centered, attention-starved women who are used to getting their way and always being right. She has quite a talent for making enemies, both on and off this show. And poor Natasha - her strategy of incessant smiling, nodding and spinning everything into a positive is not the way to achieve this particular American dream. It takes action, work and some semblance of cognizance. But I have to say, I liked her makeover a lot. Natasha's blunt-cut bangs and almost-black straight hair brought her blue eyes to the foreground (not burying them under bleached-out frizz) and gave her a more exotic look to go with the foreign accent. In fact, long, dark voluminous locks with bangs that make eyes pop (e.g., Felicia, Jaslene) and short pixie styles to accent bone structure (like Dionne and Renee) seemed to be the overarching looks of choice for Cycle 8. Even Tyra suddenly has big bushy curls: You just know no one on the show is allowed to top her hairstyle. Diana was made into a honey blonde, a color that so perfectly mirrored her skin, I'm now afraid it'll wash her out and she'll fade into the background. I was pleasantly surprised with her last week; her face photographs well and she appears much better (so far) in a 2-D photo than in the 3-D world. It would seem to me to be a little early in the cycle for naked photo shoots, let alone expecting the wannabes to turn images of candy - chocolate kisses, birthday cake, candy canes, dulce de leche and the like - into high fashion. I knew we'd get a mix of blank stares and hoochie looks, though straddling giant sundaes definitely surprised me. Despite all her pouting, Brittany again had a great shoot and yielded a fabulous photo. And I was impressed by several images. On the other hand, this particular challenge gave the plus-sizes even more to worry about - sucking in - on top of everything else. Diana's having troubles with body angles as it is. Thankfully, of the bottom two, she won over Cassandra, who had the less attractive face. At least she was able to get a crazy fun 'fro out of the deal - and chuck that sewn-on wig. Thanks for keeping up with the Fierce Count, readers! I heard seven in last Wednesday's episode - Jaslene, Miss J., Renee (3), Tyra (2) - and only one (!) tonight. Total season tally: 14. show less

Premise: Aspiring models compete for a chance to break into the business in this runaway hit. Created and executive-produced by supermodel Tyra Banks, its formula of beautiful women plus unappealing behavior make it enormously popular and one of the more intriguing reality shows, with its wannabe cover girls living together in a house and, between catfights, going out on photo shoots while they vie for a modeling contract.
