Episode Recap: "The Models Go Green"
Welcome to the launch of the new season of
America's Next Top Model! Although Cycle 9 officially kicked off last week, the competition doesn't really begin until the girls start living under one roof.
This week's episode introduced the girls to the "green" house and eco-friendly camper they'll be spending much of their time in throughout the season. Upon arriving at their new digs, the models were in awe. There was a built-in catwalk that allowed the competitors to watch themselves strut - pretty damn cool - and the whole outdoorsy theme is definitely a nice touch.
Before getting too comfortable in their new pad, the girls were given their first photo assignment: demonstrate the dangers of smoking. As the shoot got underway, we started to see which models have natural talent and which ones will need major guidance from
Jay Manuel. The girls were each photographed in two ways - first as the beautiful women they are, puffing away on a cigarette, and then again as victims of the various illnesses smoking may cause. It was a bit disturbing that Mila couldn't stop cracking up while portraying a chemotherapy patient (clearly the girl has some maturing to do) and it showed in her pictures.
Meanwhile in the waiting room, the first cat-fight broke out as Bianca attacked Lisa about her past as an erotic dancer. Boy, that was quick! Bianca is shaping up to steal the b*tch title that Ebony nabbed for herself last week.
When they returned to the house, Kimberly wasted no time in being the first to talk smack about her fellow housemates. The girls sat around the pool and discussed Heather's awkward demeanor, while she listened on from inside the house. (She has
Asperger's syndrome, a mild form of autism.) How nice of Kimberly to exploit Heather's insecurities and make her feel worse about herself! It seems like she'll be giving Bianca a run for her money.
The next morning, Miss Jay arrived at the house to teach the girls about dressing like a model, then sent them off to Old Navy to put to his advice to use. Once they arrived at the store, they were greeted by Benny Ninja (from Cycle 8's flexing challenge) and informed that they'd have 10 minutes to put together the trendiest outfit they could find.
Back at the house once again, the girls prepared for their first elimination. It was nice to see our favorite judges back on the panel. They picked apart the girls' photos and outfits, and then Tyra made an interesting announcement; she declared this season of
Top Model to be smoke-free. She said that since the contestants are role models for young girls, they shouldn't be sending the message that smoking is cool. (Plus, it's bound to make the girls who do smoke more easily aggravated! Genius!)
By the end of episode, Saleisha was awarded the challenge prize for putting together the best outfit and Ebony and Mila were in the bottom two, at risk of being sent home. Ultimately, the judges awarded Mila the embarrassment of being the first cast-off of the season. By the way, I
loved that they gave Heather the first pass to the next round, and that she looked around in disbelief that it was her name they had called. Shows those other girls right! However, the moment of the week would have to be Miss Jay's comment about Mila's glamour shot looking like she had just farted. Gotta love this show.
