  • Opera Singer Forces Audience to Pull 180 | Today's Top Videos | 7/22/2008
We didn't know what to expect on last week's America's Got Talent when we first heard that opera singer Donald Braswell had lost his voice for several years and decided to have his first returning stage performance on national television. But low and behold, his rendition of Josh Groban's "You Raise Me Up" left us floored by his talent. It took a couple refrains to win this tough crowd over, but once he did, they couldn’t get enough. Lucky for him the judges ignored the crowd and didn't... read more
  • Reader's Jeer of the Week: America's Springer Fever | Cheers & Jeers | 7/18/2008
Posted by lilacgirl57...Jeers and jeers again to the audience of America's Got Talent. I was afraid this would happen with Jerry Springer as host, and I was right. They are as obnoxious and out-of-control as the crazies Jerry has on his own show. Please settle them down, and let the judges do their job. The audience distracts the viewer from the talent (or lack thereof) on the stage. MAKE THEM STOP!!!• Share your own raves and rants about other shows on the Reader Cheers & Jeers... read more
  • Episode recap: Auditions, Week Four | America's Got Talent Show Blog | 7/9/2008
Piers, Sharon, The Hoff and Jerry are back in Atlanta to start off week four.Billy Dodson - He's big, he's burly, he's imposing. He gets on stage and sings...soprano? Three quick X's.Alex Pyles - A 10-year-old cutie with a great southern accent. She comes out on stage with her father, and they perform a combination of acrobatics, gymnastics and self-defense. I mean, they are hurling each other around the stage and kicking the you-know-what out of each other (with very light contact). Piers... read more

The ultimate winner collects $1 million and a Vegas contract. This week we start in Dallas (where, by the way, ventriloquist Terry Fator was discovered last year).Corky Duke - does some kind of cowboy contortionist routine. Three quick X's. But, you know what? He can kick kind of high. The Rodeo Rhythm Kings - Three cowboys... read more
  • Episode recap: Auditions, Week Two | America's Got Talent Show Blog | 6/25/2008
Week Two of finding the nation's best talent. And, sadly, again in standard definition. Piers, Sharon and The Hoff are in L.A. with Jerry. The judges' picks move onto the next round in Las Vegas, all vying for a grand prize of $1 million and a Vegas contract. Victoria - a singing fairy (and part-time nanny) who sings in a three-and-a-half octave voice. Er, right. She is perhaps three and a half notes into When You Wish Upon a Star when Piers issues an 'X' with a buzzer that blows everyone's... read more
  • America's Got Talent Needs More Tikes! | Today's Top Videos | 6/24/2008
Last week's season premiere of America's Got Talent had everyone talking the next day (and it wasn't just about how much that impersonator looked like Britney). People were left with a warm fuzzy feeling all over after 4-year-old Kaitlyn Maher took the stage and belted out her rendition of "Somewhere Out There." Such a little bundle! She was even able to make heart-o-stone Piers melt in his seat. read more
  • Premiere Ratings for Talent Show, Tori & Dean | Today's News: Our Take | 6/19/2008
NBC's America's Got Talent on Tuesday night kicked off its new season with an audience of 12.8 million total viewers, making it the summer's best season premiere to date. AGT also netted the Peacock its best numbers for a prime-time entertainment telecast since the April 15 episode of SVU.That same night, Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood gave Oxygen its largest-ever audience for a season opener — upwards of 667 thousand viewers, a 30 percent increase over Tori & Dean's Season 2... read more
  • Cheers: America's Sweetheart | Cheers & Jeers | 6/18/2008
Cheers to America's Got Talent for saving the best for last — and living up to its name. The final act of the NBC show's overlong Season 3 opener, Neal E. Boyd, blew the roof off the joint. The 32-year-old insurance salesman from Missouri belted out Puccini's "Nessa Dorma" like the love child of Ruben Studdard and Luciano Pavarotti. I could've done without the weepy backstory about being raised by a single mom, but there's no denying Boyd's got a gift. If only I could say the same for that... read more
  • Episode Recap: New York, Chicago & Los Angeles | America's Got Talent Show Blog | 6/18/2008
We're back for another season and the first thing I notice is this show is not in high definition. Uh, NBC, 2008 called and it will see you now. This show takes place in a darn theater. I think you guys can dig up a few HD cameras. OK, I feel better. The big news is that this year's winner wins $1 million and a gig in Las Vegas. That's big. Plus, we learn last year's winner, ventriloquist Terry Fator, has just signed a $100 million deal to perform in Vegas.Piers Morgan, Sharon Osborne, David... read more
  • America's Got Talent Loves the Underdog! | Today's Top Videos | 6/17/2008
Nothing says summer is here quite like the Hoff, Sharon Osborne and that curmudgeon British dude sitting behind the judges' table for an all new season of America's Got Talent. And get a load of this kid's unlikely talent — baton twirling. Now before you dismiss the performance as some lame beauty pageant shtick, you may want to check it out. We'd like to see this contestant's childhood bullies and haters twirling fire batons on their necks while on national television. Sweet, sweet... read more
  • Piers Morgan Sizes up America's Talent Again | TV Guide Interviews & Features | 6/17/2008

  • NBC Gets Patriotic This Summer | Today's News: Our Take | 3/5/2008
Thanks to a schedule full of America-centric titles, NBC is dubbing its off-season an "All-American Summer," Variety reports. The network is getting behind the return of American Gladiators and America's Got Talent as a patriotic buildup to the Olympics in August. Although the network is waving the red, white and blue, the Peacock's true colors this summer will be reality television. In addition to nonscripted shows on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, the network is devoting an entire Monday-night... read more
  • Can Someone Fire Celebrity Apprentice? | Roush Dispatch | 1/4/2008
Well, that didn't take long. Three days into the new year and I already have a strong candidate for my 2008 worst-of-the-year list: Celebrity Apprentice, which we have to hope is the last gasp for this out-of-gas reality franchise.Enlisting C-listers (which in most cases is a generous label) is the final desperate refuge for most shows in this oversaturated genre, but even by that standard, Celebrity Apprentice is pathetic. As is its attempt to turn the overexposed Omarosa into this season's... read more
  • Ask Matt | 9/28/2007
Why haven't ABC, CBS and NBC copied the cable networks with new summertime programs like The Closer, Damages, Burn Notice, etc.? Don't they know the public is clamoring for good programs to watch during the summer hiatus? read more
  • TV News Reporters Remember the Death of Diana | The Biz | 8/22/2007
August 31 will mark 10 years since Princess Diana of Wales died in a high-speed car crash in Paris. For weeks it was a major saga that consumed television news. Here's how some of the journalists who covered it remember the shocking tragedy.Piers Morgan of America's Got Talent who was then the editor of England’s Daily Mirror: I went out to dinner on the night she died. I got a call about 1 am U.K. time saying her car had been in an accident and that Dodi Fayed was hurt and Diana was OK.... read more
  • Look Who's Talking! America's Got Talent Champ Terry Fator | TV Guide Interviews & Features | 8/22/2007
The competition was fierce, but a puppet managed to beat the other final-four contestants to be crowned winner of NBC's America's Got Talent on Aug. 21. Ventriloquist Terry Fator went home with the $1-million prize and the title of Best New Act in America. "I honestly did not know if America was ready to vote a ventriloquist as the No. 1 act, and I'm just so flattered and I appreciate America so much today for their votes and their support. I'm just flying, I'm elated," Fator gushed to ... read more
  • Ask Matt | 8/20/2007
I know you're a big fan of So You Think You Can Dance and was wondering if you think Fox will eventually decide to move the show to the regular season instead of the summer. Do you think that would be a good idea? I know summer is becoming more competitive and networks like to have original programming then, but the show has become so popular, it almost doesn't make sense to "waste" it during months when ratings are less important. Plus, it would be great if such a move raised the show's ... read more

NBC has granted early pickups to both America's Got Talent and Last Comic Standing, which currently are wrapping their second and fifth seasons, respectively. With an average audience of 12.1 million total viewers, AGT is this summer's most-watched program — even besting Hasselhoff's "hamburger" video — while LCS recently gave the Peacock a six-month time-period high in key demos. read more
  • Monday's Singing Bee for Ladies Only | Today's News: Our Take | 8/2/2007
Monday's episode of NBC's The Singing Bee, titled "Girl Power," will pay lip service to, as host Joey Fatone puts it, "girl groups, girl singers and… my favorite subject — girls." Why, oh why do I just know that despite the evening's theme, the show still isn't going to pay its due respect to the one and only Martika? Anyway, all the buzz about Bee seems to be paying off. It retained much of the audience from its America's Got Talent lead-in on Tuesday — Talent drew 10.7 million... read more
