First Aired: April 23, 2001
Profiling photographer Edward S. Curtis (1868-1952), who spent some 30 years finding “the beautiful in Indian life,” says narrator Sheila Tousey. Curtis's grandiose goal, he said, was to record “every phase of Indian life of all tribes.” Yet he occasionally doctored his artful photographs and films to make them more “authentic.” But, says one Native American who's interviewed: “We were more to him than just happy-snaps.” Voice of Curtis: Bill Pullman.
