American Idol: Which Singer Made Keith Urban Throw His Chair?

Alex Preston, Jena Irene, Caleb Johnson

American Idol celebrated its 500th (!) episode Wednesday night, with tributes throughout the broadcast from past winners. But really, the visits only served as a reminder of how far the show has fallen since its Kelly Clarkson/Carrie Underwood heydays.

But that's not the only depressing aspect of tonight's show: We learn right at the start that Caleb Johnson has "no voice," after suffering from bronchitis, sinusitis, and a bruised vocal chord. Yikes.

Jessica Meuse: "American Idol Is Like The Hunger Games"

Jessica Meuse

Was a last-minute song change to blame for Jessica Meuse's elimination from American Idollast week?

Meuse needed to come out swinging on Idol's Top 4 week, and unfortunately her renditions ofPink's "So What" and Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone" were not up to par. But, according to Meuse, an 11th hour switch-up ahead of the episode didn't give her a lot to work with.

"I was going to do 'The Hell You Put Me Through,' an original song," Meuse tells TVGuide.com. "But then last minute, they ended up scrapping up all the originals and I had to learn another song. So, two out of three songs I learned from nothing. 'So What' was the replacement, and it was a quick fix, and I absolutely had to do it then and there."

American Idol

American Idol will look a little different when it returns for Season 14, according to Fox Entertainment President Kevin Reilly.

Acknowledging that Idol is not the ratings juggernaut that it was in its heyday (the performance show has routinely been topped by Survivor this season), Reilly said on a conference call Monday that the reality competition show will get a reduced order when it returns in 2015, going from 50-plus hours of programming to about 37.

The Five Burning Questions of Upfronts

The Baltimore Ravens Stadium

1. How do you solve a problem like Thursday Night Football?

CBS won the bidding war against NBC, ABC and ESPN to broadcast the NFL's Thursday schedule and will begin airing the games September 11 for seven weeks, delaying the launch of the Eye's Thursday lineup. For CEO Les Moonves and CBS Entertainment chairman Nina Tassler, the no-brainer course of action would be to shift monster hit The Big Bang Theory to Mondays during that period to help launch new comedy How I Met Your Dad, then send it back to Thursdays after the Chargers face the Broncos in the final matchup on October 23.

Premise: The smash reality series showcases wannabe pop stars competing for a record deal by crooning for a panel of judges, including, most entertainingly, the acid-tongued Simon Cowell, who departed the show in 2010 after serving for nine seasons. The judges review a performer's talent (or lack thereof), and at-home viewers then vote for their favorite potential star. The show helped launch the careers of such artists as Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson and Adam Lambert.
