American Idol Episode Recap: We Have a Winner! Season 10, Episode 39

After an American Idol season that was at times shockingly unpredictable and at other times maddeningly obvious, the (more than 122 million) votes are in: We have a new champion. But the overstuffed finale, of course, offered up a number of musical distractions before the first bit of confetti rained down inside the Nokia Theatre.

Beyonce! Gaga! Spider-Man! Jack Black?  Rather than break down the whole night, we humbly offer our favorite moments... read more

American Idol Episode Recap: The Final 2 Perform Season 10, Episode 38

The time has come. Tonight's Nashville Star American Idol finale pits confident crooner Scotty McCreery against bashful belter Lauren Alaina for the Season 10 crown. But it wouldn't be finale night without a bit of drama, and reports of Lauren's last-minute vocal problems had us sitting on the edge of our couch all night (or at least the first 10 minutes). Add to that a confusing lack of judges' commentary for the first half of the show and an absolutely terrible tune written by America, and you've got this season's penultimate episode. So, who will take a confetti shower tomorrow night? read more

American Idol Episode Recap: Top 2 Revealed Season 10, Episode 37

After 95 million votes, the most in an Idol non-finale episode, we're down to the Top 3. Ryan Seacrest tells us that last week the remaining four, James, Haley, Scotty and Lauren, went over to meet J.J. Abrams at his production company, Bad Robot. In his screening room the contestants, and now us, get to see a few clips from Abrams' upcoming film Super 8. Back on stage, Ryan introduces star Elle Fanning and puts her on the spot by asking who her favorite it. Ducking out of the question, she instead tells us how her cousin has been a fan of Scotty from Day 1.

American Idol Episode Recap: The Final Three Perform Season 10, Episode 36

It's one week until the finals and American Idol celebrates by extending the show an extra 30 minutes (because that's what Idol needs — more filler!). Tonight, each finalist will perform not once, not twice, but three times. They'll pick their first song, Jimmy will pick their second and the judges will pick their final performance of the evening. After Lady Gaga's awkward yet hilarious appearance on the show last week, this week Beyoncé serves as the mentor during the first round (she is also plugging her new music video, of course). Again, she's not the first artist I would pick for the two country kids and a rocker like Haley, but she's won 16 Grammy awards and she's even married to a one-time music executive so she should have some sort of wisdom to pass on, yes? So did she help give the Idols that extra something to get them to the finale? Let's find out... read more

American Idol Episode Recap: The Top 3 Revealed Season 10, Episode 35

A record-setting 72 million votes were cast to determine which three American Idol singers would be become hometown heroes and which singer would, in the immortal words of Ryan Seacrest, "just be going home." But that poor, non-heroic person was a bit of a shock. So, who is headed home as the shame of his or her hometown? (Seriously, producers, let's not pretend that all of these kids aren't famous, OK? ) Let's find out... read more

American Idol Episode Recap: The Final Four Perform Season 10, Episode 34

Wednesday's American Idol reminds us that this week's vote will decide which singers get to go "home as heroes." I personally think they'll all go home pretty famous, but I won't get into that now. In any case, to win those all-important votes, the singers must sing songs that inspire them before diving into the songbook of Leiber and Stoller, who wrote many hits in the post-World War II era. And who is the best person to guide the wannabes through that classic song book? Lady Gaga! Yeah, I don't get the connection either, but Gaga is in the house. So, who was the best? Let's find out.... read more

American Idol Episode Recap: The Top 4 Revealed Season 10, Episode 33

A season-high 60 million votes were cast, but another singer's American Idol dream comes to a close. Ryan Seacrest tried his best to make us think we would be surprised at the result, and when that didn't work, he distracted us with ads for Bing and Steven Tyler's new book, and Hell's Kitchen. And the Most Beautiful Woman in the World performed (live?) on the Idol stage. So, who left us tonight? read more

American Idol Episode Recap: The Top 5 Perform Season 10, Episode 32

This week American Idol took on songs from both the present and past generations, which is a nice change from sticking to one artist throughout the show. Sheryl Crow was the mentor of the week and a nice addition to the rehearsal process. Crow, who's a talented singer and songwriter in her own right, had some thoughtful notes and criticism that the kiddies seemed to really respond to. (Did you know she was a backup singer for Michael Jackson?) And James Durbin, of all people, seemed the most excited to be working with her.

Hey everyone, it's Robyn Ross, the girl who interviews all the Idols post-elimination, filling in for Adam this week. While I'm not sure I have as accurate of a musical ear as my colleague, I'll try my best to weigh in on all the performances. So let's get to it.

And another one bites the dust. American Idol results shows are always a bit of a test of patience, although this season's early use of the judges' save and Pia-gate have kept things interesting at times. But tonight's results came at a glacial pace, with the producers padding the hour with a ridiculous amount of filler.  (Really, they sent the singers to the British consulate to celebrate the royal wedding?)

So, let's wade through it, shall we? read more

American Idol Episode Recap: The Top 6 Perform Season 10, Episode 30

What a difference a week makes on American Idol. Just seven days ago, the contestants were singing hits from the past decade, including a couple currently on the charts. Tonight, the singers gently swayed me to sleep with the delightfully dated tunes of Carole King. Don't get me wrong: She's written a number of great songs, this just seems like an odd theme week for the so-called "new and improved" Idol. (But hey, the slightly-less-dated Babyface is there! And Miley Cyrus!)

In addition to the six singers, we also got three mostly uneventful duets, though one of them was just plain disastrous. While no one's solo was terrible, it wasn't exactly the show's finest hour (and a half). Let's break it down.... read more

Premise: The smash reality series showcases wannabe pop stars competing for a record deal by crooning for a panel of judges, including, most entertainingly, the acid-tongued Simon Cowell, who departed the show in 2010 after serving for nine seasons. The judges review a performer's talent (or lack thereof), and at-home viewers then vote for their favorite potential star. The show helped launch the careers of such artists as Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson and Adam Lambert.
