American Idol: We Didn't See This Coming Season 11, Episode 30

For the first time in a while, we open the evening with a group number that isn't a complete disaster. Progress! The finalists sing "Dancing in the Street" by Martha and the Vandellas, and even though it sounds like Jessica's microphone is on mute, the performance is pretty good overall.

The first two contestants Seacrest brings to center stage are BFFs Joshua and Hollie. Joshua is safe, and Hollie is the first person in jeopardy.

We take a brief break to chat with the guy that was on Idol a few seasons ago... you know, the gray-haired one. Taylor Hicks! He makes a big announcement that he'll be performing in Vegas this summer, but no one really cares.

Speaking of Idol alums, Kris Allen is here. Remember him? He was the winner of Season 8. He plays a piano that looks like it was resurrected from a 19th century church and sings a song that causes girls to wave their cell phones in unison. Because lighters are soooo 20 years ago.

Skylar and Elise take the stage next — and per usual, Elise takes a seat in the bottom 3. Skylar is safe.

After a sweet tribute to Dick Clark, Seacrest makes a very natural segue into LMFAO's performance. Because Dick Clark and LMFAO are one and the same, really. There are smoke machines and people wearing cardboard robot heads! And when a massive dancing zebra appears on stage, Steven Tyler reverts back to an acid trip from the '70s, freaks out, and bolts. We don't know this for sure, but it's a safe assumption.

Colton, Phillip and Jessica are next to find out their fate. Jessica and Phillip are safe, and for the first time, Colton finds himself in the bottom three.

Elise is the first to find out she is safe and then in an unexpected turn of events — Colton is the one who must go home! I was certain the teen vote would at least push him through to the top three, but this just shows the effect that one weak night will have on a contestant.

So that's it! Are you shocked by tonight's results? At this point in the competition, who do you think will win? Vote in our poll below!

Premise: The smash reality series showcases wannabe pop stars competing for a record deal by crooning for a panel of judges, including, most entertainingly, the acid-tongued Simon Cowell, who departed the show in 2010 after serving for nine seasons. The judges review a performer's talent (or lack thereof), and at-home viewers then vote for their favorite potential star. The show helped launch the careers of such artists as Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson and Adam Lambert.
