American Idol Episode Recap: The Top 6 Revealed Season 10, Episode 29

After the American Idol judges finally decided to — gasp — judge a little on Wednesday's episode, it will be especially interesting to see who goes home. Will their criticism for Scotty, Jacob and Haley put them in the bottom three or will the fans follow their heart and leave J. Lo, Steven and Randy's remarks by the wayside? Let's find out.

The first group performance of the night is Lauren, Stefano, Haley and Jacob performing "Hey, Soul Sister" by Train. As my colleague says, "the train has derailed" as pairing Stefano and Jacob's vocals together proves to be a very poor choice. The girls' harmonies are fine, but the choreography is completely stale and their chemistry is off, making this foursome look like an awkward family quartet.

Casey, Scotty and Paul next sing "Viva La Vida," a slightly better choice for the theme. The melody is OK, but the guys keep doing this weird "talk to the hand" expression that makes me think they're about to switch over to a sassy Supremes song. Unlike most of the group performances — which I find completely worthless — this song is at least enlightening because it shows Scotty can actually do something other than country and do it well. Dear Scotty, please remember this next week!

Results: Casey, Jacob
After being a big Casey supporter early on, his last few weeks have hardly been memorable so last night was a big step forward for him. I really don't think he deserves to be in the bottom three after delivering one of the night's more memorable performances. Bad earpiece or not, I am hoping Jacob is in the bottom of three for that lackluster performance last night. Justice is served: Jacob is in the bottom 3 and Casey is safe.

David Cook, "The Last Goodbye"
Why? Because we don't hear this guy's deep rocker growl enough on the goodbye song every Thursday? His vocals are a little shaky, but the song is catchy enough. After his performance, David explains that he's really only here so his mom can meet Steven Tyler. She runs up and gives him a hug and gives her embarrassed son the "rock on" hand signal.

Insert montage here of the remaining kids going to a Dodgers game, bowling and getting manicures (even Scotty). He's going to regret that later.

Results: Lauren, James, Stefano
Stefano is no stranger to the bottom three, and I think he deserves to go back there after choosing Ne-Yo last night (not his finest hour). At this point, it seems James and Lauren are also unstoppable and they both gave worthy enough performances. Called it again: James and Lauren are safe, and Stefano is in the bottom 3.

Results: Scotty, Haley
I wouldn't argue with both going to the bottom three, but there's only room for one. Scotty was so boring last night and — on the opposite end — Haley made too bold of a choice for her voice. Ryan reads the envelope, says "wow," and sends Scotty to the couch. However, Haley is only in the bottom 3 for a hot second before he beckons her back and whispers in her ear that she is also safe. Reason #321 why I don't like Ryan on results night.

Katy Perry, "E.T."
Um, there's lots of lasers? And dancing aliens? And Katy in a crown and cape with her own light-up (and cleavage baring) alien costume? And then there's a surprise appearance from Kanye West! He's wearing a mink vest, so apparently he didn't get the note about the alien theme? For shame.

The Bottom Two: Jacob, Stefano
After 52 million votes, the person going home is Stefano. Compared to the other contestants, I think it was definitely Stefano's time to go. Even before Ryan calls his name, Stefano looks up and out to the audience with a look that says he knows he's going home. Yes, he's had this look before (Pia!), but he is completely calm and smiling when he learns his fate. The same cannot be said for James, who has his head buried in his hands. Don't worry about Stefano, everyone! He made it a lot further than the other two wild cards and I'm sure he'll flirt up a storm tonight and find a new "friend" to help him forget his misery.

Premise: The smash reality series showcases wannabe pop stars competing for a record deal by crooning for a panel of judges, including, most entertainingly, the acid-tongued Simon Cowell, who departed the show in 2010 after serving for nine seasons. The judges review a performer's talent (or lack thereof), and at-home viewers then vote for their favorite potential star. The show helped launch the careers of such artists as Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson and Adam Lambert.
