American Idol Episode Recap: Top 5 Revealed Season 8, Episode 31

The Top 7 Idols brace themselves to lose two contestants from their tight-knit group in this week's elimination round. But, not before we hear the sweet sounds of Season 7 runner-up, David Archuleta.

Yo, dawgs! I was so happy to read in the comments from Tuesday's show that many you have joined me in falling for Kris Allen. He flew under the radar for a few weeks, but now, it's impossible to deny how good he really is. The only mystery: Why is he not as popular as Danny and Adam? It's baffling.

What a treat: We not only get a disco group song from our Idols, but Paula is the choreographer. We get to see a little behind-the-scenes video of her rehearsal time with the kids. She says she really loves them all and wants to show them that they can dance. Oh honey, who are you kidding? Not everyone can dance, and these kids are just exhausted. But Paula's a taskmaster and whips the Idols into shape.

The group number begins and we see that the lip-synching is back! And, Paula does a very awkward intro on stage for the Idols, who are all dressed in disco-era fashions. The horror! Actually, it could have been way worse. The dancing is definitely the most impressive they've ever done in a group number, but please Adam, no more dirty lip-snarling/hip-thrusting! When they're done, they hand Paula the hugest bouquet of flowers ever. Like she's an opera diva! Hilarious.

Eliminations — Part One
After the silly Ford music video (luckily it's super-short), we start with the eliminations. Lil Rounds is the first one sent to center of the stage, where I think two more Idols will join her. But no! Ryan says instantly that tonight is the end of the road for Lil. Wow, that was fast! I think we all knew Lil was going home tonight, but who knew it would be so soon?

Disco Medley
The medley starts off with Freda Payne singing "Band of Gold" and it's painful to watch. Sorry fans o' Freda, but yikes, is this performance bad! I might have slipped on my remote and hit fast forward... by accident, of course. Now, we move on to Thelma Houston, who sings "Don't Leave Me This Way," and it's much less painful — at least, the song is less painful, but not the outfit. KC from KC and the Sunshine Band enters and sings another wedding favorite, "Get Down Tonight." Damn, nice backup dancers! OK, that one was fun.

Eliminations — Part Two
Kris, Adam and Danny are all safe (duh), while Anoop and Allison are sent to the stools of doom. I agree with Anoop as a contender to leave, but I'm so disturbed that America has ranked Allison in the bottom again! Argh!

David Archuleta
Aw, baby-faced Archie is back in the house! He's singing "Touch My Hand" (can you hear the girls swooning now?), and if I'm being totally honest, I think this song is not all that great. He sounds really off in the beginning, like it's too low for him, or he's not quite comfortable with this style of singing. Oh jeez, now he's doing a jumpy-hoppy thing during the chorus. It's a good thing Simon isn't critiquing this song. When Ryan brings him over to give Allison and Anoop advice, he's just the sweet little bug he used to be — even if he does sound a bit like a beauty pageant contestant.

Eliminations — Part Three
Alas, it's Anoop's last stand tonight. He sings "Dim All the Lights" one last time, and we see a shot of his parents looking so sad. Tear! I'll miss Anoop and his cheesy R&B numbers.

Did you agree with America? Will you miss Lil or Anoop?

Premise: The smash reality series showcases wannabe pop stars competing for a record deal by crooning for a panel of judges, including, most entertainingly, the acid-tongued Simon Cowell, who departed the show in 2010 after serving for nine seasons. The judges review a performer's talent (or lack thereof), and at-home viewers then vote for their favorite potential star. The show helped launch the careers of such artists as Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson and Adam Lambert.
