American Idol Episode Recap: Top 11 Revealed Season 8, Episode 20

A new rule that could have quite an impact on the rest of the season is revealed, and Kanye West and Kelly Clarkson perform (separately).

Hey everyone! Thanks for the well wishes in the comments today, and of course, for your always thoughtful and funny posts. So, after that mysterious announcement Tuesday evening about a new rule for the competition, Ryan finally reveals "the judges' save:" If America boots someone who the judges feel is not ready to leave, they may save that person (only once for the rest of the season). If someone is saved that week, no one will be eliminated, but two will go home the following week. And, this will only be allowed until the final five are revealed. The rule is to prevent the Chris Daughtrys and Jennifer Hudsons from being eliminated before their time. This could be interesting. Hmm.

And now we have to sit through a tour of the Idols' new digs — which is a ridiculous mansion complete with indoor and outdoor pool, steam room, basketball court, bowling alley, etc. I can only imagine how many families who are struggling in this economy and watching this show for a little escapism are grinding their teeth in annoyance. Just sayin'.

Wow, I don't know if I've ever seen such awful lip-synching in my life. The Jackson Five medley by the Idols is one of the most painful musical numbers I've seen in a long time. And Danny, please don't do that hip thrust thing. Ever. Again.

The First Elimination
Jasmine and Megan are in first bottom two, but Megan gets to sit back down. I thought for sure that Jorge would be in the bottom. Jasmine has a chance to sing for the judges again, which is reminiscent of the "dance for your life" component on So You Think You Can Dance. However, her singing doesn't help her and Randy announces the judges "already discussed it" (when?) and they are sending her home. Wow, this new rule is great if they save you, but completely brutal if the don't — which is great TV drama. I wish her well and think she'll be just fine, considering she's so young and so talented.

Kanye West Performs "Heartless"
What can I say about Kanye? He's awesome, and I'm so glad he got rid of that bad '80s hair he was sportin' for a while. Oh, but I see that his back-up singer decided to wear it instead. Did you see the lady back-up singer's outfit? She could be a linebacker with those crazy sleeves. Did they raid a Coming to America costume closet?

The Second Elimination — Part 1
Anoop (tear!) and Jorge head to the center of the stage to learn their fate, but we have to wait until (all together now) after the break... and after Kelly Clarkson performs. That's just mean.

Kelly Clarkson Performs
Kelly humors Ryan with an impromptu interview about her new album. She launches into "My Life Would Suck Without You," which is very old-school, pop-Kelly Clarkson. My dog even starts singing along because it's so darn catchy. You go with your bad self, Kelly. That was rockin'. Even the judges give her a standing ovation.

The Second Elimination — Part 2
Anoop is safe, and Jorge sings one more time for the judges. But when Ryan asks Simon if the judges will save Jorge, he curtly says, "No. Sorry." Aw! Even though I knew he was going home, I'm a little sad for him. He does have a lovely voice, and I think, like Jasmine, he has a future in music.

What did you think of the first eliminations, and do you like this new rule?

Premise: The smash reality series showcases wannabe pop stars competing for a record deal by crooning for a panel of judges, including, most entertainingly, the acid-tongued Simon Cowell, who departed the show in 2010 after serving for nine seasons. The judges review a performer's talent (or lack thereof), and at-home viewers then vote for their favorite potential star. The show helped launch the careers of such artists as Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson and Adam Lambert.
