Tonight we open on our knees praying for something better than last night. Although, there's been a lot of trash talk about my boy JT-alike (Chris Richardson), and I'm just not hearing that! I love him. Randy opens with, "It doesn't matter what you sing as long as you sing it." And I am with him. Let's do some damage tonight, ladies! Paula better not walk past anything magnetic, because she is going to go flying - lighten up on the jewelry, P-shizzle. Then the quibbling begins again. Let's focus, folks.
Stephanie Edwards, 19, Savannah, GA
Comes out and sets the tone. The song doesn't do anything and if it's a popular one, it's unrecognizable. Oh, finally I realize it's "How Come You Don't Call Me Anymore." Stephanie's got a fantastic voice, but she didn't kick it until midway through. The judges say her performance is a "million times better than anything we saw last night." When Melinda spoke in the little roundtable with Ryan, she was smart, positive and humble, and Antonella just sounded like a spoiled teenager.
Amy Krebs, 22, Seattle, WA
She's got a pretty bad nose job. As kids we used to push our noses up and it would raise your lips off your teeth. I'm not sure why we did it, because it made us look weird. At least it wasn't permanent. Amy sings something, and I am not feeling it. Oh, please don't do that to Bonnie. She's too cookie-cutter for me. Simon says she has the "personality of a candle," and I think he means one that has been blown out. I love Simon.
Leslie Hunt, 24, Chicago, IL
I like her look and her personality, but I probably wouldn't have encouraged her to sing Aretha. I liked her before because she has a kind of rock-n-roll thing that is always missing in this competition. (Yeah, I know it's a "pop" contest, but a girl can dream, can't she?) I would have rather heard her sing Bonnie or Sheryl or even some Alison Krauss. But it is enjoyable, and she looks awfully darn cute. I do not agree with Simon (and Ryan?) that she is ungainly and out of her comfort zone.
Sabrina Sloan, 27, Studio City, CA
She's a pretty girl singing Aretha. But she's just yelling and not singing, though there was a chill. Her tone is good. I do not like her hair - we've had some of the worst hairdos this season. Calling all stylists! Not sure I like her rendition of this song. Randy likes it more than me. Simon says she has a "desire to win," and I agree with that, but we'll see.
Antonella Barba, 20, Point Pleasant, NJ
It's hard to get past how pretty she is. And she does have a nice voice, but it's not great. Is she singing an Aerosmith song? I frankly think she should be a model. She looks smitten with her own performance, and it isn't worth it. Simon feels like the song selection has "seriously damaged her chances," and I don't think he's far off.
Best line: "It would be like Ryan doing the news."
Jordin Sparks, 17, Glendale, AZ
She's gonna sing Tracy Chapman, and let's hope she can bring it. She's charming and I love her. Beautiful tone. Good song!!! Yes!!! Holy cow! I am clapping along with the boys! Only thing - she's a little stiff - I don't care because I want to hear her sing more. Jordin may be the one to beat, if you ask me! Randy says, "I don't know if there's any song that is too big for you - so go there!" I love that she towers over Ryan.
Nicole Tranquillo, 20, Warnersville, PA
The song is in the wrong key for her - way too low. But I like the way she sings. No idea what the song is. She's unique compared to the other girl - I'm surprised at the screaming since she says she is a voice major, and that's just a complete no-no. I'm on the fence. Chaka/Erika Badu - who could tell? Paula thinks it was "out of this world." I just think it was wrong.
Haley Scarnato, 24, San Antonio, TX
I didn't care for Haley during Hollywood week, and I don't care for her anymore here. She looks a little like Brittany Murphy. I don't know what she's singing. I feel like I'm watching
Star Search. She should
not be singing Celine. "Everything about you tonight was old." She poo-poos the judges advice, and I say she's not gonna win if she isn't going to take their advice.
Melinda Doolittle, 29, Brentwood, TN
I loved her during Hollywood week. I love that she was considering being a back-up singer for
Idol. That's hysterical because she's so fantastic! Melinda conquers Aretha and is a natural performer. I can see her as the next Idol. Hmmm I foresee a battle between Jordin and Melinda. And she's humble!
Alaina Alexander, 24, Redlands, CA
The one who cries a lot sings "Brass in Pocket." It's not a very interesting song for her, first of all, and she's holding back. According to the lyrics she wants us to notice her, but you know, what I've noticed is that America doesn't want a skinny blonde Idol. They haven't picked one yet. Again, she's off-key as she was in Hollywood. Totally wrong song. If she were the lead singer of a band, I would choose now to go to the bathroom. Backhanded Complimenter Simon says she is "relying on your looks tonight, not your voice." He's right.
More infighting as Simon accuses Ryan of trying to date Alaina.
Gina Glocksen, 22, Naperville, IL
She has beautiful eyes. And she's the Chris Sligh of the girl's side. I think she makes a good song choice - "All By Myself" - and she looks hot! She might have wanted to sing it up a half key - but I love what she does with it. She owns that song! Simon doesn't care for it, and I think he is a schmuck - he just doesn't like her look. But you have to admit she can sing.
Lakisha Jones, 27, Flint, MI
Idol saves Lakisha for last, and it's a good thing because no one could have come after her. She brings the house down, singing Effie's song, "I Am Telling You." I've got to revise the last paragraph because Lakisha brought it! Simon says, "I am very tempted to tell 23 other people to book their tickets home." Lakisha is in a different league. I can't believe she's shorter than Ryan, because her presence is so large!
Here are my picks: We have to squish Lakisha into the front of the line because, according to Simon, "Lakisha has thrown down the gauntlet." But I also love Jordin, Melinda and Gina so far, and I want to see more of Leslie and Stephanie. As far as I am concerned, we can just get rid of all the cookie-cutter girls: Antonella, Alaina, Haley, Amy and Nicole.
I've got to go, because my friend is on
CSI: NY tonight and I have to check him out! Back here tomorrow for the results show. I can hardly wait.
