Cameron Mathison and Sherri Shepherd by Steve Fenn/ABC

What ingredients go into a successful TV awards show? Hmm...fancy gowns, lots of energy, poignant speeches...how about free-flowing alcohol? In an effort to mimic the unpredictable nature of the Golden Globe Awards, attendees at this evening's Daytime Emmy Awards (ABC, 8 pm/ET) will be treated to an open bar. They'll also be sitting at dinner theater-style round tables."Usually everyone is sitting in a row," The View panelist and Daytime Emmys cohost Sherri Shepherd told the AP. We're also going to do something so that fans will be able to get a view of what's going on at the different tables."Celebs will find digital video cameras at their tables to capture the evening's events. Video will be uploaded to SOAPnet.com throughout the evening so that viewers can follow all the fun and antics of their favorite daytime stars.Shepherd cohosts tonight's ceremony with All My Children hunk Cameron Mathison. Cameron Mathison courtesy TLC

The rest of us have one, maybe two jobs, but All My Children's Cameron Mathison at this moment is juggling four, upwards of four-and-a-half projects. Already the front man for SOAPnet's I Wanna Be a Soap Star, the daytime vet has now signed on to host TLC's Your Place or Mine?, a new game show premiering Sunday at 8 pm/ET. TVGuide.com invited Cam to preview his latest gig, reflect on his Dancing past, and ponder the future of Pine Valley (Gillian's possible return included). — Matt MitovichTVGuide.com: Are you trying to pull a Joey Fatone and be everywhere at once?Cameron Mathison: I'm trying! Joey, I think, is "pulling a Cameron Mathison." I had it going before he did.TVGuide.com: My wife and I watch What Not to Wear most every night, and TLC is promo-ing Your Place Or Mine? like crazy!Mathison: They're publicizing the heck out of it, yeah. I think it's a good show. First of all, the game itself is a fun trivia game, because it's geared toward family and there's a dynamic of r... read more

Daytime Emmy Nominations Feeling Very Restless

Jeanne Cooper by Robert Voets, Peter Bergman by Robert Voets, Tracey Bregman by Tony Esparza/CBS

Nominations for the 35th annual Daytime Emmy awards were announced Wednesday, and CBS' daytime lineup has the early lead with 51 total nods — or for comparison purposes 12.75 nominations per soap. ABC netted 27 noms for its three sudsers, while NBC's Days of Our Lives and Passions amassed 10 bids between 'em.Among the noteworthy tallies, The Young and the Restless collected 11 acting nods, including at least one contender in every race, while Days made an atypically strong showing, scoring four acting nominees. Kudoscast host ABC, meanwhile, may want to instead broadcast a test pattern, as All My Children, General Hospital and One Life to Live netted just three acting nods combined. That said, both GH and OLTL are vying in both the outstanding drama series and writing contests. The major races:Lead ActressMaura West (Carly, ATWT)Crystal Chappell (Olivia, GL)Nicole Forester (Cassie, GL)Michelle Stafford (Phyllis, Y&R)Jeanne Cooper (Katherine, Y&R)Lead ActorDavid Canary (A... read more

Logan Riff: Don't Smite the Strike-busting Soaps

Days of Our Lives courtesy NBC

Days of Our Lives and All My Children are in hot water with the Writers Guild for barring certain scribes from returning to work after the strike and keeping their scab replacements. Not OK, says the union. But let's not get hasty here! Days went from tedious to terrific when the strike material started airing, and AMC has been slowly, surely recapturing its glory days. (Love that Sugar and Erica!) The dumped writers should of course be paid off per their contracts. But rehired after doing a crap job? No way! — Michael Logan read more

Inside All My Children's Next Two Big Returns

Ricky Paull Goldin by Donna Svennevik/ABC

One All My Children character is coming back from hell, another from heaven. On April 30, daytime megastar Ricky Paull Goldin — who just exited Guiding Light — will join AMC as the new Jake Martin. Viewers will learn that Jake, who left town in 2003 to join Doctors Without Borders in Africa, is currently held captive in Darfur, where he is being forced to treat wounded soldiers in one of the illegal armies. Two episodes later, Emmy-winner Cady McClain will rejoin the show as Dixie Martin — in angel form. Fans were furious when the beloved character was killed last year with a batch of poisoned pancakes.Weirdly, the two returns are connected. AMC exec producer Julie Carruthers, who offered Goldin the gig when she heard he was quitting GL, tells me that Jake will be rescued by Aidan and brought back to America against his will. "Jake comes back emotionally scarred and with a very big secret," Carruthers notes. "He does not want to see his family. He wants to get back to... read more

Premise: The soap that introduced Erica Kane and her many husbands to the masses launched on Jan. 5, 1970, and won a number of Best Drama Emmys along the way. Set in Pine Valley, a fictional East Coast burb, `AMC' was created by the prolific Agnes Nixon and has been a soap with a social conscience, tackling issues like addiction, abortion and homosexuality. In fact, it featured daytime's first lesbian kiss, between Erica's daughter Bianca and con woman Lena Kundera, who later stole her heart.
