Things Get Ugly for All My Children's Fusion

Rebecca Budig by Steve Fenn/ABC

I think I'm gonna like this guy. All My Children's new head writer, Chuck Pratt — whose work officially hits the air Aug. 27 — has a big problem with Fusion, the soap's hopelessly dopey cosmetics corporation. You know, the all-girl firm where no work seems to get done but there's a stripper pole and disco lights? "It took me three weeks to figure out what they actually do at Fusion and that Greenlee [Rebecca Budig] and Kendall [Alicia Minshew] run the place," says Pratt. The solution? Pratt will take a cue from Ugly Betty, where he previously served as a consulting producer. "I'm going to blast into Fusion and make it a real workplace," he says. "We're going to get into the drama of office politics. We'll see what it's like for the poor assistants and underlings when two spoiled rich girls are in charge." — Michael Logan read more

Preview: Goldin and Ehlers Light Up All My Children

Ricky Paull Goldin and Beth Ehlers by Heidi Gutman/ABC

All My Children is about to get very political. On July 24, fan fave Beth Ehlers — who recently fled from CBS' Guiding Light — will join the ABC soap as Taylor McBride, an Army lieutenant fresh from a tour in Iraq. She’ll be teamed once again with GL partner Ricky Paull Goldin, who defected from that troubled soap earlier this year. Clearly, ABC hopes to re-create their supercouple magic — but don't expect Jake and Taylor to be another Gus and Harley."Like many great romances, this one will be born of conflict," says AMC’s newly arrived head writer, Charles Pratt, Jr. "Jake and Taylor’s relationship, not unlike our current presidential campaign, is a clash of ideals — the liberal versus the conservative. Taylor represents the modern warrior who is gung-ho military. For her, it's all about her country, her unit, her mission, not about the politics."Jake, on the other hand, spent years working in Africa with Doctors Without Borders and has a "complet... read more

Daytime Emmy Nominations Feeling Very Restless

Jeanne Cooper by Robert Voets, Peter Bergman by Robert Voets, Tracey Bregman by Tony Esparza/CBS

Nominations for the 35th annual Daytime Emmy awards were announced Wednesday, and CBS' daytime lineup has the early lead with 51 total nods — or for comparison purposes 12.75 nominations per soap. ABC netted 27 noms for its three sudsers, while NBC's Days of Our Lives and Passions amassed 10 bids between 'em.Among the noteworthy tallies, The Young and the Restless collected 11 acting nods, including at least one contender in every race, while Days made an atypically strong showing, scoring four acting nominees. Kudoscast host ABC, meanwhile, may want to instead broadcast a test pattern, as All My Children, General Hospital and One Life to Live netted just three acting nods combined. That said, both GH and OLTL are vying in both the outstanding drama series and writing contests. The major races:Lead ActressMaura West (Carly, ATWT)Crystal Chappell (Olivia, GL)Nicole Forester (Cassie, GL)Michelle Stafford (Phyllis, Y&R)Jeanne Cooper (Katherine, Y&R)Lead ActorDavid Canary (A... read more

Logan Riff: Don't Smite the Strike-busting Soaps

Days of Our Lives courtesy NBC

Days of Our Lives and All My Children are in hot water with the Writers Guild for barring certain scribes from returning to work after the strike and keeping their scab replacements. Not OK, says the union. But let's not get hasty here! Days went from tedious to terrific when the strike material started airing, and AMC has been slowly, surely recapturing its glory days. (Love that Sugar and Erica!) The dumped writers should of course be paid off per their contracts. But rehired after doing a crap job? No way! — Michael Logan read more

Set in Pine Valley, a fictional East Coast burb, `AMC' was created by the prolific Agnes Nixon and has been a soap with a social conscience, tackling issues like addiction, abortion and homosexuality. In fact, it featured daytime's first lesbian kiss, between Erica's daughter Bianca and con woman Lena Kundera, who later stole her heart.
