A Pakistani Muslim exchange student adjusts to life and high school in a Wisconsin town with the help of a nerdy 16-year-old.
  • Ask Matt | 5/19/2008
Q: Have you kept up with CW's Aliens in America and Everybody Hates Chris this season? Wonky scheduling and strike delays have made a mess of things, and the CW seems to have forgotten these shows exist. (Two weeks ago, a new episode of Aliens in America was billed as a repeat in all the TV listings I checked.) I ask because I consider these to be two of the best comedies on television and, deceptively, among the boldest. Here are two wholesome, light-hearted shows dealing intelligently with... read more
  • It's Official: CW Axes Aliens in America | Ausiello Report | 5/9/2008
Someone alert the nice folks at the MIA Network — some fresh product's headed their way. I just got the unofficial official word that one of this season's best new comedies, Aliens in America, has been axed. Despite rave reviews when it debuted last fall, the CW laffer went largely ignored by viewers. Which sucks for them, because they missed out on a fantastic little show.I've got better news for fans of another CW comedy, Reaper. I'm told it's "90 percent likely" that it'll be on the... read more
  • The CW "Outsources" Its Sunday-night Block; Two Dramas, Two Comedies Coming | Today's News: Our Take | 5/9/2008
The CW has signed a deal with the production finance company Media Rights Capital to take over its Sunday-night programming block, where Everybody Hates Chris, Aliens in America and The Game currently reside. As part of the pact, MRC is contracted to develop two dramas and two comedies, and sell ad time for them. The CW (and the WB before it) traditionally has had a very rough go of it trying to gain traction with Sunday programming/ratings. It is believed that by pawning off the quagmire to a... read more
  • A Closer Look at Aliens in America's Amy Pietz | TV Guide Interviews & Features | 5/9/2008
Amy Pietz isn?t afraid to say what?s on her mind. Which isn't surprising, considering she?s spent the last year doing a splendidly didactic turn as Franny Tolchuck, that hyper-involved, middle-class mom on Aliens in America (Sundays at 8:30 pm/ET), the CW?s post-9/11 satire of cultural acceptance in small-town Wisconsin. As much as she would like to think herself world-wise (she did, after all, take in a Muslim exchange student), Franny is influenced by the old-line gospel according to Bill ... read more
  • Aliens in America Star to Get Nip/Tucked | Today's News: Our Take | 4/25/2008
While Aliens in America is still on the bubble, the show's costar, Adhir Kalyan, has sewn up a recurring role on FX's Nip/Tuck. As Ausiello reported, Nip/Tuck was casting for a young Dr. Raj (really young), and they've found their boy, says the Reporter. Dr. Raj is a 16-year-old, socially awkward doc who joins the medical group to help Dr. Troy with surgeries. No premiere date has been set, but the show's next season is in production.Kalyan fans will also find him in several upcoming movies,... read more

Q: I found it interesting that you had a question recently about not being able to gather around the metaphorical watercooler to discuss popular TV shows. I am finding that, due to how much TV programming is available these days, it is impossible for me to find someone to talk about my favorite shows with, except for the ultra-popular shows like Grey's Anatomy. Case in point, I know of nobody besides me who watches Aliens in America on the CW. I started watching it because Scott Patterson from... read more

  • Episode Recap: "Church" | Aliens in America Show Blog | 12/11/2007
The show opens with the Tolchucks getting all spruced up to go on their ritual Sunday voyage to Shop World. Raja tells Franny that their weekly ritual is a lot like going to church; they go together as a family every Sunday and leave behind roughly ten percent of their income. Heh. Shocked that Raja thinks her family is so spiritually devoid, she decides the family is going back to their church that minute... only to find out it has now become a Chicken Wing restaurant. Determined to find some... read more

I never watched the CW before this year, but suddenly I'm finding myself watching shows that have been running for a while. Some of them I didn't know I was missing (Everybody Hates Chris, Beauty and the Geek and Supernatural), while others have only just started (Reaper, Gossip Girl and Aliens in America, definitely the funniest new show of the year). Am I a statistically insignificant anomaly, or do the ratings indicate that this will be the breakout year for the CW (or would have been if not... read more
  • Shelf Life | Adhir and Dan's Aliens in America Blog | 11/2/2007
An extract from a true story taken from the Fictitious Journal of Adhir Kalyan:I walk down the aisle, raise my hand, and run my fingers along the products arranged meticulously on the shelves. One item, not in keeping with the host of products attempting to grab my attention, is slightly out of place, and as a result, grabs my attention. It is only when I slide it into its intended position that I notice the six numbers and two letters:BB: 05.23.07I cannot quite come to terms with what I have... read more

I was an evacuee from the wildfires in Southern California last week; I had to leave my house for five days, and I didn't get power back until the sixth day. That's right, six days without television! Luckily, my house is fine and so is my TiVo. The experience left me with two epiphanies: First, I was able to view most of the shows I missed online, which is an awesome thing I had never appreciated before. I always thought, why watch online when I can just watch my TV? Well, thanks to the major... read more

As an avid reader, I am shocked that you haven't mentioned the hilarious new comedy Aliens in America. Have you noticed how well written and superbly acted this show is? And it has our favorite guy, Scott Patterson! read more

Which new shows do you think have lived up to their hype? Which shows have fizzled, and which are just hitting their stride? Chuck is the first must-see on my list. Life is a close second, reminding me a bit of Boomtown. Pushing Daisies is growing on me. Until Lost and Battlestar Galactica return, I have found few series worth my time. What shows do you look forward to, and which have you given up on? read more
  • ABC Stays Dirty, The CW Sows More Reaper | Today's News: Our Take | 10/26/2007
ABC has ordered an additional three scripts for two more of its freshman series: Dirty Sexy Money (woo-hoo!) and... Carpoolers (who knew!). Thus far this season, ABC has picked up Private Practice and Pushing Daisies for full seasons, ordered six more Samantha Who? scripts and, well, done nothing yet about improving Cavemen.Elsewhere, the CW has picked up three additional scripts for Reaper, while Aliens in America, sources tell the Reporter, is set to stay in production beyond its original... read more
  • Ask Matt | 10/22/2007
I'm really enjoying Aliens in America, and I worry that people are missing the boat on this surprisingly funny half-hour of television. The second episode was one of the highlights of the week! The ratings are abysmal, and so few people are talking about this show that I'm worried it'll be pulled before others have the opportunity to give it a chance. What do you think about Aliens in America ? does it have a fighting chance? Does the fact that it's on the CW work against it? Would its ratings... read more
  • Drew By Day; Comedy Tonight | Roush Dispatch | 10/15/2007
Giggling at the antics of the slap-happy contestants who “come on down” at what he calls “the happiest place on Earth,” Drew Carey looks like he’s having a blast, and looks right at home, on the spiffed-up set of The Price Is Right as he takes over as host today. There’s no fuss and no ceremony, and outside of the introduction telling us we’re at the Bob Barker Studio in Television City, and that one of the games is still called “Barker’s Bargain... read more
  • Aliens in America's Dan Byrd Has a Message of Hope for the Nation's Nerds | TV Guide Interviews & Features | 10/15/2007
He might be Medora, Wisconsin's biggest dork ever, but Aliens in America's (Mondays, 8:30 pm/ET, The CW) Justin Tolchuk manages to have a pretty adventurous life anyway. So far we've seen him get on school television, earn some major locker-room cred for his pillow-talk skills, and even crash a rockin' pizza-bagel party. All that and Justin's school year has hardly even begun. TVGuide.com caught up with his portrayer, Dan Byrd, to get some advice on getting girls, getting into "clubs" and ... read more

Maybe I'm a teensy bit spoiled by the excellent summer programs that sucked me in (like Top Chef, Damages, Mad Men and Army Wives), but the fall season so far left me feeling kind of blah. There are some mediocre shows (like Bionic Woman, whose second episode was terrible), some good guilty pleasures (Gossip Girl and Dirty Sexy Money) and some downright stinkers. (Private Practice, anyone? Sorry, I'm not tuning in to watch Addison McBeal ever again.) Even some of my returning faves have gotten... read more
  • CBS Is Sweet on Cane; CW Embraces Aliens | Today's News: Our Take | 10/11/2007
Just as NBC has shown some love to four of its new series, CBS has ordered four more scripts for Cane, even though the Jimmy Smits serial (like the Peacock's Life and Journeyman) has had trouble mustering an eye-opening audience.Meanwhile, the CW — which was the first network to give a full-season order to a new show (Gossip Girl) — has ordered three more scripts for Aliens in America. Thank Allah! read more
