I have to wholeheartedly ...

Question: I have to wholeheartedly disagree with Dewey's notion that a show should stand the test of time before being lauded as one of TV's best. For one thing, creators, writers, directors and actors move on from TV projects, so to judge a TV show in its entirety robs the talented people behind the show's success of their glory and exalts the mediocre people responsible for its less successful years. Think of Alias: The first two seasons were brilliant in every way, but once J.J. Abrams left to pursue other projects, the show declined in quality. But to deny Alias' impact on television merely because of the final seasons would be wrong. And vice versa — we shouldn't unduly exalt the final three seasons merely because the first two were so innovative. I also think of Twin Peaks, a show that changed the face of television, albeit for a very short time. If it were judged in its entirety, the last 10 to 15 episodes would have to knock its overall quality down a few notches, and we would ... read more

December 12, 2006: Merry Little Christmas

Viewers have been vocal about their dislike of the Tritter ( David Morse) story line, pointing specifically to his seemingly unlimited powers. "It's unrealistic," they scream. In real life, there's no way a cop would be able to freeze bank accounts and impound cars and whatever else Tritter has done. But that's the kicker, isn't it? And that's why I haven't been all that bothered by Tritter's boundless powers. If we are going to hold dramas to the standards of reality, then we'll all end up watching documentaries. I’m open to suspending reality in my entertainment viewing. It's what kept me tuning in to shows like 24 and Alias. However, I am growing a bit tired of the Tritter arc, mostly because it forces me to recognize the unrealistic elements that are the cornerstone of this series. I have to step back and say, like so many others, that's so unrealistic! Tonight's episode, featuring Abigail (Kacie Borrowman), an apparent dwarf with multisystem failure, and her actual dwarf m... read more

At the Movies: Alias Fave Boards Scary Train

Per Variety, Bradley Cooper will topline Clive Barker's Midnight Train, playing a photographer on the trail of a New York City subway-based serial killer.... Jonathan Demme is lensing He Comes in Peace, a documentary about Jimmy Carter, as the former president embarks on a book tour he started last month.... Pedro Almodovar's next film, El Piel Que Habito (The Skin I Live In) will (surprise!) star Penelope Cruz, and "be totally different from my previous 16 [films]," he tells a Spanish daily. "It's a very tough story about revenge." read more

Heroes' Greg Grunberg Takes TV Guide on the Hunt for Sylar

Greg Grunberg, Heroes

Greg Grunberg sure has come a long way since being chewed up and spit out by that whatever on Lost. Now, he's the star of his own watercooler-conversation series, NBC's Heroes (Mondays at 9 pm/ET). When Grunberg stopped by the TV Guide offices the morning after last week's episode aired, we debriefed him on the hunt for Sylar, Matt's upcoming date with a cheerleader, and what longtime pal J.J. Abrams was like as a tyke. TVGuide.com: First, I have to say: Would that every husband could read their wives' minds!Greg Grunberg: Yeah, but be careful what you wish for. You immediately thin read more

J.J. Abrams Divulges Mission: Impossible Secrets, and More!

J.J. Abrams and Tom Cruise, Mission: Impossible III

That sizzling sound you hear isn't originating from the iconic Mission: Impossible fuse, but from the red-hot DVD release of Mission: Impossible III, simultaneously available today in standard as well as both (HD DVD, Blu-ray) hi-definition formats. To mark the action-packed escapade's vid store arrival, TVGuide.com spoke with director J.J. Abrams, who divulged secrets from the M:i:III set, shared his awe of franchise front man Tom Cruise (aka IMF superagent Ethan Hunt), and even updated us on that "little" Star Trek film thing he has in the works. TVGuide.com: First off, I want to say that I really, really enjoyed the film. I have two young read more

Trial by Television
Justice: Wooing a court of public opinion

If there were any justice, TV would ease up on the glut of crime and legal dramas. But that's hardly likely, and Fox's cynical Justice (Wednesdays at 9 pm/ET) knows it all too well. Realizing how pointless it would be to try to reinvent the courtroom drama, Justice embraces the fact that our post-O.J. society is saturated with true-crime coverage and fake-crime stories. That's why TV itself (embodied by a fictional infotainment show, "American Crime") is a major character in Jerry Bruckheimer's latest fun-to-watch procedural. As the head of a glamorous L.A. law firm, Victor Garber sheds the tight-lipped restraint of Alias' Jack Bristow and taps into his theatrical roots as cocky read more

Recently a prominent ...

Question: Recently a prominent newspaper gave Three Moons over Milford on ABC Family a decent review — but this same paper hated Alias. Therefore, I am not inclined to trust them. Have you seen this show? Does it make for good, light summer viewing? Thanks! Answer: Perhaps you missed my review of this one, which was published before Moons' premiere. I quote, in part: "This frantic tongue-in-cheek mayhem had me asking, 'Apocalypse when?'.... The one good thing about Three Moons is that it reminds you that life truly is too short. Too short to be wasted on TV this cloying and annoying." Which only goes to show that one person's idea of "good, light summer viewing" may be another's gag-me poison. I'm sure there are those who will find the show delightfully cute. I found it too cute and couldn't wait for it to be over ... read more

Lost Boss Tackles Star Trek Enterprise

J.J. Abrams (inset) has "incredible" plans for Star Trek.

J.J. Abrams, the man behind Lost, Alias and Mission: Impossible III, is about to add another sci-fi classic to his résumé. Paramount recently handed the 40-year-old writer-producer-director the reins to one of its most revered projects: the next Star Trek film. Abrams will produce the movie with Lost cocreator (and fellow Trekker) Damon Lindelof. Abrams recently called from his Pacific Palisades, California, home, where he was hanging with kids (and budding sci-fi fans) Henry, Gracie and baby August, to chat about sci-fi, the th read more

Evil Prez Explains Her Prison Break

Patricia Wettig on Prison Break

Patricia Wettig now has something in common with 24 alum Dennis Haysbert (currently on CBS' The Unit) — neither of them are any longer playing the president of the United States for Fox. While Wettig's Prison Break character, the crafty Caroline Reynolds, was set to play the leader of the free world in the show's sophomore season, the actress — who wasn't under contract to the Fox drama — opted instead to accept a role on B read more

Premise: A sexy, high-octane thrill ride filled with espionage, intrigue and cliffhangers. It chronicles the adventures of operative Sydney Bristow as she battles shadowy intelligence agencies, along with some seriously twisted family members. During Season 2, executive producer J.J. Abrams abandoned the double-agent angle, then revived it in the fourth year after the arrival of Syd's half-sister and the show's move from a ratings-challenged Sunday slot to a plush post-`Lost' perch on Wednesdays.
