The story of a Sahrawi refugee in North Africa hoping to reunite with her mother, whom she hasn't seen since she was a toddler, leads to a startling revelation: she is a slave. As a result, the filmmakers change course and investigate slavery in Africa's Western Sahara region, which causes friction with the Polisario, the rebel group at odds with Morocco, and the Moroccan government.
