Thintervention Episode Recap: "The Final Weigh-In" Season 1, Episode 8

On this week's episode of Thintervention, after six weeks of working Jackie's program on their own, the clients reunite for the final weigh-in.

In one word, I'd describe the season finale as understated. And I liked that about it. What differentiates Thintervention from other weight-loss shows is less attention on shedding pounds and more focus on emotional transformations.  "My program is not just about reaching a goal weight. It's about making smarter choices," Jackie says. The low-key vibe surrounding the scale makes sense.

The episode begins with Jackie introducing the cast members, one by one, to a banquet hall full of their family and friends. First up is Mandy. During her time away, she has decided to get her trainer's license, and based on the results of her first client — her husband has lost 23 pounds — Jackie may have some competition! The most striking change in Mandy's appearance is her sculpted legs.

Jeana walks out next, and her confident strut grabs everyone's attention. Gone is the woman with low self-esteem.

Before Shannon steps out, we learn she has been keeping a secret. Just a few weeks ago, she confessed to Jackie that since the age of 12, she has been trapped in a dangerous cycle of starving herself, binging, and taking laxatives. In footage taped prior to the finale, Jackie and Dr. Ramani tell Shannon that her confession is an important first step to addressing her problem. When she enters the room, she looks as if a huge burden has been lifted.

Joe has stayed true to the gym and flexes his muscles as he walks up to Jackie. She is impressed!

Following Joe is Nikki. She has developed a fondness for hiking and no longer gets upset when she looks in the mirror.

Stacy faced many obstacles when she began Jackie's program, beginning with PCOS:  Polycystic ovary syndrome, a problem in which a woman's hormones are out of balance and can affect appearance. Stacy admits she often used PCOS as an excuse to neglect her body. That phase is over, though, and she is no longer afraid to work out.

When Bryan returned home, he immediately began production on a film. In the past, this situation was a trigger to eat nonstop, but being able to fit into clothes that he hasn't been able to wear for years motivates him to stay on track. Jackie gets teary when he walks out. He has shown her how strong people can be. His partner is glad that Bryan's light has come back on.

We see a short clip of the clients working out with Jackie a few days prior to the finale. The huffs, puffs, and pouts permeating the flashbacks of the clients' first session with J have been replaced with endurance, strength, and confidence.

As much as the show is more focused on long-term commitments to healthier lifestyles than immediate results, the clients did begin the program with weight loss goals, and everyone wants to know how they've done. It's time to step on the scale.

Mandy, whose goal was to lose 30 pounds, has lost 34. Jeana has dropped 21 pounds, just four pounds shy of her goal of 25. Joe loses two more pounds than his goal, for a total weight-loss of 42. Shannon still has 16 pounds to go before reaching her goal of 50, but she has lost 24 percent of her body fat — a huge accomplishment. Stacy has lost 40 pounds. She had hoped to lose 50, but a person with PCOS is typically able to shed only two pounds at most per week, and she has surpassed this average by almost double. Nikki, even with her sometimes-spotty commitment to Jackie's program, has lost 41 pounds, only nine pounds away from her goal. Finally, Bryan, whose weight-loss goal of 60 pounds was the most ambitious of the group, has lost 68 — and he exceeds expectations once again.

Although they weren't the ones who lost the most weight, I suspect Jeana and Shannon might be walking away with the most confidence. While the other five clients all wore variations of black, Jeana and Shannon boldly bypassed the slimming shade and opted for colors: a rich eggplant for Jeana and a bright blue for Shannon.

Who do you think has made the most dramatic transformation? Do you want to see this show come back for a second season?
