Ratings: The River Runs Weakly; NCIS Sustains Strong Numbers with 200th Episode

Joe Anderson, Paulina Gaitan

ABC's thriller The River debuted to much weaker numbers than several of the network's other drama premieres earlier this season (and a couple of them got canceled). Still, it fared better for the network than any program in its time slot since the autumn ending of Dancing with the Stars.

The season's top show, NCIS, marked its 200th show with another big audience, while also trumping Fox's Glee in the coveted adults-18-to-49 demographic. The CBS ratings stalwart didn't set a series record, however.

The Biz: Will These Shows Sink or Swim?

David Caruso

As mid-season shows debut over the next three months, it will be crunch time for a number of series that haven't been tearing up the Nielsen charts. Here's what network insiders say are the shows on the bubble as execs look to set their schedules in May.

ABC
A second-year ratings fade may mean it's time to pull a sheet over the Dana Delany-led Body of Proof. While the network ordered an extra episode of Pan Am in order to keep a hold on the cast until May, its chances of returning next fall are as likely as an airport going a full day without a flight delay. Comedy Happy Endings doesn't do a great job retaining the lead-in from the mighty Modern Family, but ABC parent Disney has an ownership stake in the show and it's a favorite within the network's entertainment division — so a pickup for another season is considered a lock. And fan fave Cougar Town will get a final shot for renewal if it performs well in its new Tuesday time period starting February 14.

Dallas: We Never Wanted to Remake the Original

Dallas

After 21 years and one of the biggest TV cliff-hangers of all time, Dallas returns to TV this June on TNT. Just don't call the new series a reboot or a remake.

"I couldn't imagine making a remake. We've seen it. There were 357 episodes," Dallas executive producer Cynthia Cidre told reporters Saturday at TNT's winter TV previews. "It just seemed natural to catch up with Ewing family 20 years later."

When we return to Southfork, Bobby Ewing is happily re-married — to Desperate Housewives' Brenda Strong! -- and his adopted son, Christopher (Jesse Metcalfe) is desperate to push the Ewing family into a new, more environmentally minded direction away from oil. However... read more

Ratings: Victoria’s Secret, Rudolph Specials Win Big for CBS

Victoria's Secret Fashion Show

The annual parade of sexy women in sexy Victoria's Secret lingerie won the final hour of Tuesday's prime time for CBS. Hard to believe! It also posted its largest demo rating ever in the nine years that it's aired. On a more wholesome note, Rudolph with his nose so bright and his venerable TV special (with Burl Ives' narration) led off a night that the network easily won in both viewership and 18-to-49-year-olds. But it was a rerun of NCIS — the current season's No. 1 show after 10 weeks — that snared the night's most viewers.
