30 Rock Episode Recap: "Argus" Season 4, Episode 19

After getting a double dose of 30 Rock last week, one episode seems like a let down. However, Fey and the gang live up to the challenge, and produce a hilarious, quite snotty episode that holds up to any comedy around. Bring on the funny, gang.

The episode opens as Liz is picking out her "Vietnamese size two" dress for Cerie's wedding. Jack darts into Liz's office in order to notify her that he has been named in Don Giess' will, and he is ecstatic. All the boss wants is a piece of his hero's life, even "sleddy," Giess' prized boyhood sled.

Tracy interrupts rehearsal to announce that Grizz, one of his entourage members, is getting married at the end of the month. Liz is upset to find that yet another office wedding will be taking place. Tracy tries to hint to Grizz that he should be the best man, but the bodyguard has not decided yet.

Liz now finds the hard task ahead of her of notifying Jenna that the Kardashian skit is axed because "Jack is bros with Lamar Odom." Jenna doesn't care, and Liz and Pete were shocked. The actress reveals that she has met a boy, but Liz knows it is short lived, especially after she dates crazy men such as the sniper that tried to shoot her. Meanwhile, Jack attends the will execution meeting of Don Geiss, and he is elated to learn that his hero has left him his prized peacock, Argus. As Jack exclaims, "hello, old friend."

Grizz approaches Liz for advice, even though they had a sexual past, and asks her to help him convince Tracy that Dot Com should become the groom's best man. Afterwards, Jenna brings Paul (played by SNL star Will Forte), her new boyfriend, to meet her bosses. Liz and Pete instantly notice that Jenna and her new beau are hiding something, but they just don't know what yet. They hypothesize that he could be "an already-married cat strangler."

Liz heads over to talk to Jack and is frightened by the sight of Argus in the office. Jack begins to tell Liz the story of why Argus is so special to him. Geiss and Jack would spend loads of time together, discussing topics such as "how to not get a paper cut while making love in a pile of money." Argus was the honorary third member of this trifecta, and now that Geiss is gone, the peacock (notably not affiliated with NBC), is the only remembrance Jack has of the good times. The bird flails up, and puts his feather in Liz's mouth. This is a way that that peacock species marks their mates, and Jack tells his friend to run as fast as she can out of the room.

GriLiz (my new celebrity couple name for Grizz and Liz) approach Tracy in order to convince him of becoming the lead singer of the wedding band instead of assuming the best man position. He knows what they are up to, throws a tantrum, and tells Grizz to "smash the table for me." Meanwhile, Liz walks in on Paul holding Jenna's clothes. He knows he has been spotted, and begins to creep on Liz.

Kenneth walks in on his favorite "swamp eagle," Argus, listless and sleepy. He tells Jack that this is due to the fact that he has taken a mate. The two realize that the only option is for Kenneth to care for the bird, and either "Argus lives, or Kenneth dies." Back on set, Liz tries to tell Tracy to grow up, but he tells her how Dot Com is in love with Grizz's fiancé, Fiance. The two come to the conclusion that Dot Com cannot be best man under any circumstance.

Pete and Liz stalk Paul in a bar, and can't seem to find him unless "he is in a secret back room doing pot." Instead, they are disturbed to see Paul hit the stage, not as himself, but as a Jenna impersonator. As Liz returns to the office, she finds Jack trying to find food to cure Argus. She realizes that the reason her boss is so obsessed with the bird is that he never truly grieved for Geiss in the beginning, even though he went through all five stages of grief at once. She and Kenneth realize that something needs to be done to save the peacock (again, not NBC related whatsoever).

GriLiz read a note to Dot Com and Tracy, in which Grizz writes that he wants his fellow bodyguard to be his best man, especially since they went to Above The Bean Stock together, a childhood summer camp for giants. After that awkward exchange, Liz tries to tell Jenna the true identity of Paul, however, Jenna knows about the impersonator act, and, in fact, that's how the two actually met.

After Jack hears from Kenneth that Argus muttered the nicknames he and Geiss had for each other, he begins to believe that a human soul can in fact exist in an animal body. The boss talks to the bird, and the animal even signals that he wants a drink of scotch. Now it is obvious that Don Geiss is now in bird-form. Jack has a man-to-man talk with it, and finds comfort in spilling his sole. He truly believes that he is finally back in a room with his "true father."

Liz and Paul finally get a chance to talk, and he tells her that the reason he is in love with Jenna is not to further his profession, but because she accepts him for who he truly is. He is "the luckiest sh-man alive!" Jenna enters the scene, and is so honored by what she heard Paul say about her that the two have an incredibly passionate make-out session in front of Liz.

In the end, Liz convinces Grizz to ditch the best man role, but instead, he decides to add the "woman of honor" title, in which he bestows on Liz. So America, Liz is now in three weddings at once, and she is still single. Poor girl, hang in there.

What have we learned today, America? Peacocks and humans are one in the same, Jenna doesn't mind dating herself, and Liz can't stop being invited to participate in weddings. Now it seems that peacocks will fly before Liz finds a mate, literally. Until next week, let's party with Fiance, Grizz's fiancé! Not Beyonce.
