30 Rock Episode Recap: "Khonani" Season 4, Episode 18

Why are you so good at parody, 30 Rock? I thought you topped yourself back with the "Glenngary Glenn Ross" episode, but this one takes the cake. Tina Fey and the gang decide it is the perfect time to spoof the now infamous late night war scandal, and they do it using garbage men (fitting enough).

The episode opens with Liz distraught over the fact that she is not invited to "Thursday Night Thunder," a TGS Thursday tradition that she was never informed about. She voices her concerns to Tracy, and he explains how his wife Angie's pregnancy complications were the reason that he could not attend. Tracy asks Liz to "take care of Angie like a husband" because he is not ready for the responsibility, she declines, and, of course, Kenneth is game. He runs to the rescue.

Jack informs Liz that as he was having an intimate night with Avery, he began to utter Nancy's name during sex. As soon as Avery began to question him, he saved himself by pretending to say "Nanna." Avery believes him, and even puts moth-balls behind her ears and feeds our favorite boss peppermints. Even though things are still at the status quo, Jack knows he must make a decision by the end of the day, or he will risk loosing both beautiful women. Liz tells Jack she is insulted that the TGS staff does not invite her out, but Jack explains how a good boss must keep his/her distance from their staff. She seems pissed, but understands that concept.

After getting slapped across the face, Kenneth calls Tracy and tells him that he must come home and care for his wife. In hopes she doesn't "turn her rings around" on Kenneth, Tracy realizes that he must in fact care for his ailing wife. Meanwhile, Cerie tells Liz and Jenna that he wedding is back on, even after her fiancé was "on his dad's boat and captured by pirates" and saved by the A-Team. She also tells the two women that they have to plan her bachelorette work party for this evening, and Liz exclaims, "There ain't no party like a Liz Lemon party cause a Liz Lemon party is mandatory!"

In an effort to choose either Avery or Nancy, Jack decides to follow his heart: Hard Equations and Rational Thinking that is. Still, even a scientific number won't work. His equations are interrupted as Jonathan brings in Khonani, a janitor with a lot to say. He notifies Jack that he agreed to let Khonani take the late night janitor shift five years ago in order to keep him in the building (an obvious mock of the Leno/O'Brien controversy). Jack sticks with his word, and even exclaims, "This is NBC, The Biggest Loser network."

As Tracy returns home, he finds his dog Tracy Senior trying to attack Kenneth, and this is all because our favorite actor trained his dog "to hate white people, because not to racially profile, but most ghosts are white." Kenneth suggests that Tracy make Angie a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, but even though he creates the food, he ends up in a strip club.

Liz and Jenna are hard at work planning Cerie's party, even gearing up for "that Black Eyed Peas song they wrote for Bar Mitzvahs." Jack calls Liz and tries to get information on the head janitor, Subhas, in hopes of getting him to step down and leave the spot vacant for Khonani to take. Liz feels like Jack is using this janitor problem to distract him from his love triangle, but he assures her that this is not the case.

After Tracy comes back to his house, Liz calls him and tries to get the star to show up and have a good time at Cerie's party. He doesn't want to because he feels that helping Angie is more important. Even Liz saying the party will be "off the hook" isn't enough for Tracy. Finally, he realizes that he would rather be with his co-workers, and in order for him not to go, he convinces Kenneth to put the electronic dog collar on himself.

Jack calls a meeting between the original late-night trash man and Khonani. He notifies Subhas that in order to instate "fresh blood," Khonani will take over, and this will be an opportunity to "reinvent the way people think about their late-night trash removal." Jack "innovents" a way to make trash-removal earlier (hello the primetime Jay Leno Show). During his first night at 11:30, Khonani is disgruntled because there is no trash to pickup, and this is obviously due to Subhas' gig at 10:00. Jack decides to move Subhas back to his original time, and Khonani, in a fit of anger, leaves NBC to take a job "at Fox — Foxwoods Casino and Resort."

After Tracy sends Kenneth to Liz's party to take his place, Ken calls and notifies the star that he forgot to get Angie's blood-pressure medication, which is out in her car, beyond the electric fence that will set off Tracy's electric collar. He decides that he must provide for his wife and brave through "the chilly weather." Unfortunately for Kenneth, Tracy Senior followed him all the way to the subway.

It's party time at TGS, and it's a dud as expected. Jenna sings a delirious version of "Jimmy Crack Corn," Liz lectures the staff on her depression due to her not being invited to Thursday Night Thunder, and Tracy Senior attacks the staff. Tracy attempts to reach Angie's car, but the pain of the electric shock is almost too much for him to handle. He fights through, and gets the medication from the car, only to want to run all the way back to Liz's party. The staff informs Liz that she is a great problem solver, and she finds a lot of comfort in that title. She then throws on pads a football helmet, attempts to wrestle the dog, and allows her workers to leave safely. Liz, you are my hero.

What have we learned tonight? We now know that the return of The Tonight Show with Subhas is upon us, Liz is really the mother figure on the TGS staff, and there is not much of a difference between Tracy and Tracy Senior when wearing an electric dog collar. What did you think of this week's episode? Will Jack ever make a decision about whether to choose Avery or Nancy?
