Upfronts: TBS Feels More Payne, More Less

Tyler Perry's House of Payne by Andrew Eccles/TBS

TBS' half of Turner's Wednesday upfronts presentation kicked off with renewal news for Tyler Perry's House of Payne (returning in June) and 10 Items or Less. The laugh-centric cabler then announced a development slate featuring:• National Banana Already in Progress, a late-night sketch show exec-produced by Jerry Zucker (Airplane!).• A scripted comedy produced by Def Jam's Russell Simmons and starring Run DMC's "Run."• A half-hour laffer exec-produced by and starring William H. Macy.• A late-night reality series which returns middle-aged men to their frat boy days. (And you thought all it took was a case of Pabst.)• An improv show exec-produced by Jamie Foxx.• Top Ten, which claims to "pit comedians against each other."Bookmark our FALL TV GRID | Review All of Our FALL TV NEWS read more

TBS' 10 Items or Less: Check It Out!

John Lehr by Erik Heinila/TBS

The when: Get in line for the season premiere Tuesday, Jan. 15, at 11 pm/ET on TBS.Why watch?: Pining for some workplace humor? 10 Items or Less is opening its lane for business and it could be just your cure for the office blues! This scripted and sometimes improvisational show details the comedic side of life and work at a family-owned grocery store. With a cast of quirky characters that rivals Scrubs, it's easy to see why this show could be the hidden gem of the season.Who's who: Series creator and comedy improv actor John Lehr portrays Leslie Pool, the new and inept manager who inherited the Greens and Grains grocery store from his father. Assisting Leslie is the painfully awkward and equally humorous Carl Dawson (Robert Clendenin), a dorky yet endearing stock boy. Yolanda Nelson (Roberta Valderrama) adds pizzazz and plenty of attitude to the produce department, while Todd Sykes (Chris Payne Gilbert) gets treated like a piece of meat as the store's hunky butcher. Meanwhile, Ric... read more

Sex in Aisle 4

'What Women Want'This is our fourth episode and my favorite. Without giving too much away, four of our characters get it on. It’s a make-out free for all. There’s also a fight—two characters end up with black eyes. What more could you ask for? This was my first real kissing scene as an actor and I was scared to death. Actually, I had a brief kiss in an episode of ‘Jesse’ on NBC. I played Christina Applegate’s mute brother—probably the easiest gig of my life. I had a network job sandwiched between ‘Friends’ and ‘Frazier’ (by the way, I think 30 minutes of black screen sandwiched between ‘Friends’ and ‘Frazier’ would get good numbers). I got network money and I didn’t have to learn any lines! Although I have to admit that is sort of what I’m doing now. Since the show is improvised, I don’t have any lines to learn, but somehow it doesn’t feel as easy as those salad days on ‘Jesse’.My... read more

Behind the Scenes on Episode 2

Hi, blog readers! I feel like a professional blog guy, now that I'm plunking down my second blog. Wow, I just used the word "blog" three time in those two sentences. And there! I used it again. The word "blog," that is. There again. Maybe I should move on.This next show is called "The Miracle Worker," but at the office we called it "Jesus Stain," for obvious reasons. I thought I'd point out a few things that happened when we were making this one.In the first scene, Leslie accosts two Girl Scouts for selling their cookies in the store. The blonde girl is the daughter of one of the TBS executives, Lillah McCarthy. I know, I know, you're saying "Unfair!" and you may be right, but after you see her in action I think you'll agree that this kid kicks butt. Both girls were super-sweet and had no idea what to make of me. Lillah and her boss, Michael Wright, are the two TBS execs behind our show and are both ex-actors. I think that has a lot to do with their affinity for our show. Because of... read more

How I Got My Shows... (Part 1)

This week has been crazy. I spent the Thanksgiving weekend back in Oklahoma with the family... my mom was obsessed with picking up people's pumpkins from the street and roasting the seeds. I had to get out of the car in the cold a few times to load more than a handful of strangers' pumpkins. I flew home Monday to LA morning and had to go from the airport to an audition and then immediately to the G4 studios to shoot a live TV show. This has been the schedule for my life lately, so everything went smoothly because I'm used to it.Yesterday on Attack of the Show, we had a very special guest... I was very excited because he's fellow TV Guide blogger John Lehr. We laughed together, reminisced together, and even shed a few tears together... I think we're best friends now. I doubt he'd say the same, but I thought that if I put it out in the universe it might come true... fingers crossed! If you haven't checked out his blog yet, you should, but also watch his new TV show 10 Items or Less. It... read more

10 Items or Less

Even if the murder of Desperate Housewives' Nora is still giving you the heebie-jeebies about venturing to your local grocery store, it's entirely safe to check out TBS' supermarket-themed sitcom 10 Items or Less, premiering tonight at 11 pm/ET. Fronting this semi-improvised look at a family-run market is John Lehr (I'm a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here), who not only serves as cocreator, executive producer and writer, but is penning a blog about the program for TVGuide.com. Explaining 10 Items' supermarket setting to TVGuide.com during a recent visit to the set, Lehr said, "We wanted to do something relatable. We wanted to have characters who are absurd and funny, but also ones you feel could truly exist, i read more

Comedy Hits and Misses Scrubs returns while My Boys 10 Items or Less and Big Day debut

Words I've been waiting months to hear: "What new kind of crazy is this?" That rant from Dr. Cox signifies that Scrubs is finally out of hibernation, and delirious lunacy once again reigns at Sacred Heart Hospital. (Wait until you see the mileage they get out of Pop Rocks.) Fans of irreverent TV comedy can rejoice, because Scrubs is joining a terrific two-hour sitcom block on NBC on Thursdays (Scrubs airs at 9 pm/ET). Scrubs starts its sixth season with wacky slapstick confidence — don't miss the elaborate Blue Man Group gag — and an undercurrent of anxiety, as J.D., Turk, Carla and Cox all face parenthood issues with babies on the way. Does this mean they're growing up? Thankfully, not so you'd notice. It's still a blast. And while the competition (CSI, read more

Funny Girl Jennifer Elise Cox Teases a Time-Trippy Nip/Tuck!

On Nip/Tuck, Jennifer Elise Cox (inset) is Julia and Sean's "little girl."

Tonight's episode of FX's Nip/Tuck (Tuesdays at 10 pm/ET) splits its time between the present day, when Julia is preparing to leave Sean and Christian behind for good, and the year 2026, when a grown-up Annie and Conor McNamara reveal just how troubled an upbringing they each endured. Playing adult Annie is Jennifer Elise Cox (the Brady Bunch movies, Lovespring International), who recently gave TVGuide.com a sneak peek at the future-shock ahead, and also talked up her new, freewheeling comedy series. TVGuide: Were you a fan at all of Nip/Tuck going into this role?Jennifer Elise Cox: Oh, my god, I am a stalker-obsessed f read more
