Brett Favre Jets Into a New York State of Mind

The 2008 NFL season gets into full swing Sunday and the Brett Favre story will surely be a hot topic. The NFL's greatest statistical quarterback makes his debut as a member of the New York Jets Sunday against the Miami Dolphins (Sept. 7, 1 pm/ET, CBS - click here to see if your local affiliate will have the game). Prior to the game, on CBS' The NFL Today, Dan Marino sits down with Favre for a one-on-one interview (noon/ET).

Favre tearfully announced his retirement in March, only to un-retire in July and find that the Green Bay Packers were set on handing the ball to Aaron Rodgers. Things got ugly, as Green Bay management wouldn't budge from its plans and Favre demanded a release from the team. "It was a fiasco," says ESPN's Trent Dilfer. "It was disturbing to see both sides make such a drama out of it. But in the end, our league is better with [Favre] in it."

Looking ahead to his 18th season, the grizzled vet is seeking a bit of redemption: His final pass of last season was an interception in the NFC Championship that kept the Packers from the Super Bowl. That's a minor blemish as far as New York is concerned. Just 4-12 last year, they're happy to have Favre. "I thought the Jets would be a playoff team even before they got him," says CBS' Phil Simms. "I won't say [he puts them in the Super Bowl], but this will definitely change the dynamics of that team." - Robert Edelstein
