Dear Soaps,

Who was behind the hiring of Hogan Sheffer as ATWT's new head writer? Are you back on good terms with MADD and Graham? Why didn't you update the Soaps News column when the news about Sheffer taking over ATWT was released?

Dear SEW,
I've been told from various sources that Bill Graham "discovered" Sheffer, which, hopefully, means Sheffer won't get too much interference from P&G. MADD and I are pals again ("Bygones!" she wrote in her note to me); I seriously doubt Graham knows who I am... although, if memory serves, he turned down my request to interview him a few years back. Maybe he does know who I am. I didn't feel the need to update Soaps News because  in my mind, at least  it was only a matter of time before Sheffer ascended to the head writer position. I mean, P&G had warned me earlier in the week not to intimate anything about his future a read more

Did Peter Bergman (Jack, Y&R) appear in a famous TV commercial back in the 1980s?

Dear Bill,
"I'm not a doctor, but I play one on TV" were the infamous words uttered by Bergman, as well as Chris Robinson (ex-Rick Webber, GH), in a commercial for Vick's cough syrup in the early '80s. Soap actors have always been perceived as medical authorities, so commercial producers have sought them out to hawk medicinal products. Bergman's spot ran for more than four years. (MJM)

Regardling last week's raves in Soaps News: How could you forget the episodes on The Bold and the Beautiful revolving around Becky learning she is dying and her wedding to C.J.? Talk about tearjerkers. I think I went through a box of tissues!

No offense, but Becky's slow, sad trip to the grave is boring, a downer and makes no sense! Why are the Forresters being so nice to her? She's not the first girl to die, you know! However, I'd love to slip Macy one of Becky's painkiller smoothies; Macy's already hooked on booze, so what are a few prescription drugs among friends?

When did the daytime-soap version of Love Is a Many Splendored Thing air, and why was it canceled?

Dear Elena,
LIAMST, which was created by Irna Phillips, ran from Sept. 18, 1967 to March 23, 1973. The cast featured such future soap stars as Constance Towers, Beverlee McKinsey, Leslie Charleson and Leon Russom. Christopher Schemering's incredible Soap Opera Encyclopedia reports that the show wasn't canceled due to low ratings; instead, Schemering says the show was dropped due to mismanagement. Sound familiar?

Dear Soaps,

What is with Bobbie on GH? It seems as if the show is portraying (and dressing) her as if she were a younger lady than she is. No one is arguing that Jackie Zeman (Bobbie) isn't an attractive actress, but why don't TPTB have her act (and dress) more her age? It is really bothering me!

Good point! I have no clue why Bobbie dresses and acts like a promiscuous teenager, but she's not the only ABC heroine with that disorder: Erica Kane (AMC) also acts 30 years younger than she is! Seriously, do TPTB think that we want to see 50-ish women parade around in skimpy outfits with their libidos out of control? I think not! Also, do women ages 18 to 49 want to see gals of a certain age parading around like hookers? I think not! Hey, ABC: Why can't these gals act their age?

Regarding a casting item in last week's Soaps News, in which you said: "Remember the Harley (Guiding Light) fiasco last time?" Mr. Reiner, there would have been no fiasco if you hadn't begun one.

Hey, I'm not the one who put out a casting call for a character clearly named Harley Davidson Cooper for the express purpose of replacing actress Beth Ehlers or scaring her into re-signing; that honor belongs to TPTB at GL and Procter & Gamble.

Now that Saundra Santiago has been axed as GL's Carmen, what do you think about her being cast as Dorian on OLTL? Any other ideas where she might land?

Dear Jill,
I think Santiago is too ethnic to play Dorian, and she doesn't have the acting chops to compete with Slezak and Smith! I'd rather see her as Carlotta's sister, or maybe Pilar's sister on Passions.
