Season 28, Episode 7 Japan's Secret Garden

Vsiting a “satoyama,” an ecosystem created by humans to cultivate rice, which is also home to a wide variety of wildlife (“sato” means people or village; “yama,” mountain or nature). David Attenborough narrates the hour, during which time-lapse photography follows life for a year in a satoyama near Lake Biwa in central Japan. In spring, farmers flood the terraced fields---and 1000 species find their way there. Among them: catfish, which swim upstream from Lake Biwa to lay their eggs in the mud.
