Season 30, Episode 6 Sinking City of Venice

First Aired: November 19, 2002

“Sinking City of Venice” explores the quest for dryness in a place that's “not quite land and not quite sea,” as narrator Tony Kohn puts it. Trouble is, there's more sea in Venice all the time, and the effects of global warming will certainly mean even more “aqua alta” in years to come. The hour surveys the corrosive effects of saltwater on its historic buildings. (Venice was founded, 1600 years ago, on easily flooded islands because they were defensible.) And it examines the pros and cons of a proposed mobile gate system to keep the Adriatic at bay. “Eventually,” says Kohn, “something will have to give.”
