Season 27, Episode 6 Voyage of Doom

First Aired: November 23, 1999

“Voyage of Doom” chronicles the 1995 recovery of the wreck of 17th-century French explorer Robert de la Salle's ship La Belle, from Texas's Matagorda Bay. The hour also recalls the mission during which it sank: La Salle's unsuccessful 1684-87 effort to find the mouth of the Mississippi River and establish a French colony there. Had he succeeded, says Curtis Tunnell of the Texas Historical Commission, “a lot of North Americans might be speaking French to this day.”
