Season 30, Episode 16 Secret of Photo 51

First Aired: April 22, 2003

“Secret of Photo 51” examines the role of molecular biologist-crystallographer Rosalind Franklin (1920-58) in the discovery of the double-helix structure of DNA. Her role seems to have been larger than was acknowledged by James Watson and Francis Crick, who were awarded a Nobel Prize for the discovery (along with Maurice Wilkins, who's interviewed). As the hour traces the work that led to the discovery, it also explores the poisoned personal and social dynamics between the discovers. Also interviewed: Brenda Maddox, the author of “Rosalind Franklin: The Dark Lady of DNA,” on which this film partially based.
