First Aired: February 15, 2000

Examining the 1996 discovery of “Kennewick Man,” a 9300-year-old skeleton in Washington state, and the controversy it sparked because it looked “Caucasoid.” The discovery challenges the archaeological “gospel” of how the Americas were first populated. This hour reviews that “gospel” and examines the challenges, as well as the matter's racial implications, and objections by Native Americans to the scientific study of the remains. Interviewees include anthropologists James Chatters (who studied the remains) and Douglas Owsley.
