Season 30, Episode 12 Mountain of Ice

First Aired: February 11, 2003

Tracking a 2001 climb to the summit of the Vinson Massif, Antarctica's highest mountain, by an eight-person team that included author Jon Krakauer (“Into Thin Air”) and mountaineer Conrad Anker, who discovered the body of 1920s Mount Everest climber George Mallory in 1999 (the subject of a 2000 “Nova”). Also on the 17-day trek, the first ever up Vinson's east face, is Dan Stone, who's seen conducting climatological experiments. But Krakauer's in it for the experience. “We're never going to get to Mars,” he says. “This is as close as we're going to get.” Liev Schreiber narrates.
