Season 30, Episode 1 Killer Disease on Campus

Exploring meningococal disease, which strikes mostly young children and young adults. It's rare (just 3000 cases a year in the U.S.) but it can be deadly. And it can kill fast. In one case cited, a healthy college student “died overnight,” says narrator Will Lyman. The hour also tracks the disease to Great Britain, New Zealand and Africa, and explores the vaccines that can treat most forms of the disease. They're effective but not mandatory in the U.S., and health officials bemoan the disease's low profile. Says the University of Virginia's James Turner, “The battle to inform is never ending.”
