Season 1, Episode 21 Not for Ourselves Alone: The Story of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony

First Aired: November 7, 1999

Part 1 of “Not for Ourselves Alone: The Story of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony,” Burns' two-part 1999 chronicle of the two feminists' efforts to gain women's suffrage. Neither Stanton (1815-1902) nor Anthony (1820-1906) lived to see it, but their ceaseless efforts and complementary talents made Election Day 1920 a coed event. Anthony was the organizer-politician; Stanton the writer-philosopher---or, as Stanton put it: “I forged the thunderbolts and she fired them.” The result, says historian Elizabeth Griffin, was “the greatest change in social history in America.” Part 1 follows the pair from the 1848 women's-rights convention in Seneca Falls, N.Y., to a disastrous split in the women's movement after the Civil War. Sally Kellerman narrates.
